A former singer for the band Dream has accused Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter of raping her in 2002. TMZ reports that Melissa Schuman has accused Carter of sexually assaulting her when he was twenty-two and she was eighteen.

Schuman claims that their managers suggested that they start dating, assumedly to get some PR going, despite her having a boyfriend at the time. She says that Carter then invited her and a friend to his apartment in Santa Monica for a casual hangout. After some drinks, he asked her to listen to some new music he was working on, and led her into his office. He began to make out with her and then, despite her protests, forcibly performed oral sex on her and then forced her to reciprocate.

She then says that, despite her repeatedly telling him she didn’t want to have sex, he took her into his bedroom and pentratively raped her. She says she was a virgin at the time and wanted to wait until she was married, but that telling him that didn’t stop him.

Schuman said that Carter called her afterward, repeatedly, but that she refused to take his calls. She said, “He jammed my phone with calls for weeks, leaving me messages demanding I speak with him. Then he finally left me one last nasty, angry message and he never called me again.”

She told her manager about the assault, and he said he would find an attorney, but was told that Carter “had the most powerful litigator in the country… I was told I would likely be buried in humiliation, accused of being fame hungry, and it would ultimately hurt me professionally as well as publicly. I was focused on building a career and name for myself at the time and I didn’t want what he did to further affect my life and future.”

Carter’s reps have yet to comment on the story. Schuman’s blog about it is here.
