TMZ reports that the lawyers for R. Kelly filed legal documents claiming that Kelly suffers from a learning disability which affects his ability to read.

The report is in reference to a recent loss in a sexual abuse civil case. His lawyers, Zaid Abdallah and Raed Shalabi, filed documents on why the loss should not count. Per the report, the case involves Heather Williams alleging Kelly sexually abused her when she was 16. When he was served for the case, he was in Cook County Jail for failing to pay child support, and his lawyers claim he should not have been served legal papers there.

According to the legal documents, “R. Kelly suffers from a learning disability that adversely affects his ability to read. In essence he cannot [read].”

The legal documents also take issue that the lawyers for Williams could’ve served Kelly’s criminal attorney instead or delivered the documents via mail where R. Kelly lives. In response, Williams’ lawyer stated the security at Kelly’s Trump Towers residence made this impossible.

Williams later won a default judgement against the singer after he failed to appear for a hearing on the case. Kelly’s lawyers are asking the court to vacate the decision, so the singer can properly mount a defense.
