R. Kelly is seeking communications between Michael Avenatti and the Cook County State’s Attorney in the hopes that he could find something to help with his legal problems. TMZ reports that Kelly’s lawyers filed a motion in a hearing on Monday asking for all records of communications between Avenatti and Kim Foxx in light of federal charges of extortion filed against Avenatti in an unrelated incident.

Kelly’s lawyer says that Avenatti has publicly discussed several conversations with Foxx about the case against Kelly, who is charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse. Avenatti came forward with the alleged sex tape that Foxx has, which reportedly features Kelly having sex with a fourteen year-old. The lawyer also pointed out that Foxx’s issues in the Jussie Smollett case show that she is “able to be influenced and wowed” and says Avenatti has “acted as a de facto prosecutor” in the Kelly case. He wrote, “There are serious questions whether Kim Foxx was bullied or just simply manipulated by Avenatti and others.”

Avenatti responded to the motion by saying, “[Greenberg] is now trying to distract attention away from the clear guilt of his client by raising bogus arguments about me and Kim Foxx. The evidence is the evidence. Multiple witnesses/tapes, plus DNA. R Kelly will be convicted for his sexual abuse of girls.”

Kelly’s team also dropped a request for permission to travel to Dubai in April after the Dubai government denied there were any scheduled concerts there. Kelly was not at the hearing, with his lawyer citing illness.
