R. Kelly’s lawyers made a bid in court on Friday to get copies of the tapes that allegedly show the singer having sex with minors. TMZ reports that during a hearing on Friday, Kelly’s legal team asked for a copy of the tapes, which were turned over to Cook Country prosecutors by lawyer Michael Avenatti and which allegedly show the embattled R&B star engaging in sex acts with a fourteen year-old girl.

Kelly’s lawyer said that he has yet to see the tapes and thus is unable to mount any kind of defense strategy. He told TMZ before the hearing that he will order a full forensic analysis of the tapes if he and Kelly believe the tape shows him, and that they’ll speed up the trial proceedings if not.

The judge did not rule on whether the defense will get copies during the hearing, where Kelly’s lawyer said the tapes should be protected from public viewing. Kelly’s team also asked for permission for the singer to travel to Dubai for potential work, where he doesn’t have anything booked but could potentially get a gig. That motion was continued.

Kelly is standing trial for ten counts of sex abuse involving four girls, three of whom were minors.
