A new expose in the New York Times features allegations from several women of sexual and mental abuse against singer/songwriter Ryan Adams. The report, which was published Wednesday, includes allegations that Adams offered women career boosts in exchange for sexual favors. Among the seven accusers are Adams’ ex-wife, singer/actress Mandy Moore, and a woman who says she was fifteen when she began to get graphic messages from Adams.

According to the latter woman, identified as “Ava,” she was an aspiring bassist who Adams began corresponding with online. Adams allegedly turned the conversation to graphic sex messages acording to 3,217 text messages that the outlet reviewed over a nine-month period when Ava was fifteen and sixteen. (She is twenty years old now.) Ava says they eventually conducted video calls on Skype and that Adams exposed himself to her during video sex calls.

Adams allegedly asked her repeatedly about her age and while she sometimes said she was older than she actually was, he did not seem convinced. He wrote in November of 2014, “i would get in trouble if someone knew we talked like this,” and at one point said while asking her to touch herself in a sexual manner, “And tell me that your mom is not gonna kill me if she finds out we even text.” On one message, he said, “If people knew they would say I was like R Kelley lol.” Kelly, of course, is in the midst of his own sex abuse allegations.

Other women have shared similar stories, including Phoebe Bridgers who said that he gave her an expensive vintage guitar and promised to help her find success, but turned “obsessive and emotionally abusive” after a few weeks and after she broke up with him, he withheld the music they had worked on together. Other singers reported similar behavior of harassment.

Mandy Moore, who was his wife, said he was “psychologically abusive” and said,, “He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician, because you don’t play an instrument.’” she said his “controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s.”

Adams has denied the allegations. His lawyer told the outlet, “Mr. Adams unequivocally denies that he ever engaged in inappropriate online sexual communications with someone he knew was underage,” and calling the accusations “extremely serious and outlandish.”
