Ryan Adams is trying to have it both ways in his response to allegations of sexual and mental abuse against him by multiple women. Adams posted to Twitter to issue a response to the claims, which were detailed in a New York Times article on Wednesday and included allegations by seven women including Phoebe Bridgers and his ex-wife Mandy Moore. The claims against him include those of offering career advancement for sexual favors and retaliating against the womens’ careers when their relationships ended, as well as allegations by a woman, “Ava,” who says he began corresponding with her when she was fifteen and turned the conversations sexual, including video chat.

In his statement, Adams said he is not perfect and has “made many mistakes,” continuing, “To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly.” He then continues to say that the article depicts an image of him that is “unsettlingly inaccurate.” Specifically, he denies the interactions with “Ava,” stating, “I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period.” You can see his full post below.

His statement would seem to contradict the Times’ claim that they have reviewed over 3,000 text messages between Ava and Adams that took place over a nine month period when she was fifteen and sixteen.

This is actually Adams’ second response to the story, having posted a now-deleted tweet in which he said, “Happy Valentine’s Day [New York Times]. I know you got lawyers, but do you have the truth on your side? No. I do. And you have run out of friends. My folks are NOT your friends. Run your smear piece, but the leagal eagles see you. Rats. I’m f**king taking you down. Let’s learn I bait.”

Adams’ lawyer told the Times for the initial story, “Mr. Adams unequivocally denies that he ever engaged in inappropriate online sexual communications with someone he knew was underage,” and calling the accusations “extremely serious and outlandish.”
