Sony Music To Begin Pressing Vinyl Records Again

June 30, 2017 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Sony Music Entertainment is going vinyl again. CNN reports that the company has announced it will begin pressing vinyl records again for the first time in twenty-eight years.

The move comes after the nostalgic aspects of vinyl has greatly increased demand for the format, which is in the middle of a resurgence. CNN reports that the vinyl format is expected to have double-digit increases in 2017 for the seventh year in a row with a revenue of up to $900 million. Vinyl is expected to account for up to 18% of all physical music sales this year and both Sony and Panasonic have introduced new record player models to accomodate the new demand.

Sony says it will pick back up with making vinyl by March of 2018 in a Japanese factory southwest of Tokyo. It has not yet decided which music genres will receive the format.
