Tom Petty Dead At Age 66

UPDATEDx2: Tom Petty’s longtime manager, Tony Dimitriades, has confirmed that Petty passed away Monday at 8:40PM PT. He was 66.

“On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends,” Dimitriades wrote.

UPDATED: TMZ reports that a chaplain was called to Tom Petty’s hospital room this morning, and that the family has a do not resuscitate order in place. Petty is not expected to live much longer. A rep for the LAPD has confirmed that Petty has not died yet, contrary to various reports going around the internet.

ORIGINAL: TMZ reports that “Free Fallin'” singer Tom Petty was rushed to the hospital last night after he was found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest. EMTs went to his home in Malibu, California. They were able to get a pulse and immediately took him to the UCLA Santa Monica hospital. He was said to be critical the second he was found. The singer is 66. Petty’s people are said to be upset but haven’t released any official statements.

He was then put on life support but it was discovered he had no brain activity. A decision was then made to pull the life support.

Petty became popular with his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which found fame with the 1978 song “Breakdown.” He just finished a tour that ended at the Hollywood Bowl late last Monday.
