TMZ reports that the Mayor of Tom Petty’s hometown of Gainesville, Florida, is looking to fans for ideas on a proper memorial to the singer. Petty passed away last week at the age of 66. Mayor Lauren Poe went to the same high school as Petty. He said he’s preparing a proposal to honor him, but wants something better than a street sign or a day dedicated to the singer. If the city approves a memorial, then he will ask the people of Gainesville for “innovative and interactive” suggestions, like an annual event that also works to memorialize Petty.

Fans are already contacting him, including tribute bands, in the wake of Petty’s passing. Many local musicians have been covering his songs frequently.
