411’s WWE Velocity Report: 04.22.06

April 24, 2006 | Posted by Scott Fried

This week, Velocity looks back at some classic moments from the King of the Ring. To say there have been a lot is an understatement.

We start with Bret Hart beating Bam Bam Bigelow, becoming the first winner of the televised tournament and the only two-time King.

Next up, Owen Hart beats Razor Ramon to win the tournament in 1994. He would declare himself the King of Harts, then wrestle Bret for the WWF Championship in a five-star cage match at SummerSlam. The main event, however, was Undertaker versus Undertaker.

In perhaps the strongest example of the match being secondary to the angle, Steve Austin mauls Jake Roberts to win the 1996 King of the Ring. Everything about the storyline, from Roberts’s feel-good comeback to Austin’s portrayal as heartless to the post match interview make this the most legendary King of the Ring win ever.

Finally, we end with the less memorable win of HHH in 1997, beating Mankind in the finals and going on to bash him with the scepter.

Sorry, no Viscera, no Kip James.
