Backstage Update on Tapings for Japanese Bracket of AEW Women’s Title Eliminator Tournament
– As previously reported, AEW is holding a Women’s Title Eliminator Tournament this month featuring matches taking place both in the US and Japan. On today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported some new details on the upcoming tournament.
According to Meltzer, AEW Women’s World champion Hikaru Shida is currently in Japan and producing the Japanese match brackets for the tournament. This is reportedly why Shida has been off TV recently, since she had to quarantine when traveling back to Japan. Additionally, the Japanese matchups are being filmed at the Ice Ribbon Dojo, if they haven’t been filmed there already. The tournament matches are being filmed on a closed set.
The winner of the Japanese bracket will travel to the United States to face the winner of the US bracket. With regards to how the Japanese matches will air in the US, Meltzer stated, “Tony Khan said he’s working on ‘something cool,’ in order to make that happen.
Thunder Rosa will face Leyla Hirsch in the opening round for the US bracket of the tournament on tomorrow night’s episode of AEW Dynamite on TNT.
