Botched!: Cesaro’s Entrance, Charlotte’s Moon, Joey Ryan vs Mick Foley, More

August 12, 2017 | Posted by Steve Cook

Hi, hello and welcome to the column nobody in pro wrestling wants to be part of, Botched! The Road to SummerSlam continued and there were a couple of bumps along the way for some performers. Mick Foley’s life was also threatened over the weekend. Let’s take a look…

1. Cesaro Messes Up His Entrance

I don’t know what was going on backstage, but it sure looked like Cesaro’s match was earlier than he expected it to be. Dude totally messed up his James Bond walking in the spotlight deal and forgot his Raw Tag Team Championship. Take a look.

The announcers had no idea what to make of it either…Michael Cole was pretty savage with his burn on the Swiss Superman. Good thing this was just on national television and not on any type of an important match.

2. Close Call For Emma

We’ve seen some referees make a three count when the match wasn’t supposed to end lately. That is supposedly the rule WWE gives its officials…if the wrestler can’t kick out before the three count so they can continue the match, it’s the wrestler’s fault. Except when the referee bails the wrestler out anyway, like at 1:25 in the video of Emma vs. Sasha Banks vs. Alicia Fox.

Yup, Alicia didn’t kick out on time. But I get the feeling that Vince would have had a stroke backstage if Emma ended up winning the match, so it was probably for the best that the referee didn’t follow through. It also furthers the “Emma’s being held down” movement building on the Interwebs.

3. Referee Doesn’t Count A Down Braun Strowman

Braun Strowman & Roman Reigns had a heck of a Last Man Standing match on Raw, no doubt about it. There was a little bit of a problem that occured towards the finish that took a lot of people out of it and caused a lot of Twitter complaints.

At 14:20, you’ll notice the referee stop his count on Braun Strowman due to Samoa Joe applying the choke to Roman Reigns. Braun was still down and out. Joe & Reigns’ interaction shouldn’t have broken the count according to the rules of the Last Man Standing match.

Obviously, WWE decided they wanted the finish to involve Joe and protect Roman, so they fudged around the rules of the match. Most people at home probably wouldn’t notice, right? They probably didn’t. But WWE ignoring their own rules definitely qualifies as a botching in my book.

4. Charlotte Needs To Watch More Ric Flair Matches

I’m a big Charlotte fan. It took awhile to win me over, but I’m pretty well sold on her as one of the best female performers in WWE by a pretty wide margin. The one thing I don’t like is that sometimes she tries too much to be like her father. It must be tempting to run through the old man’s playbook, but I think Charlotte needs to stand on her own two feet and not do things like the Flair Flop and the flip in the corner.

At least, that’s how I felt until this week’s SmackDown match with Lana.

At 3:34 in the video Lana accidentally pulls down Charlotte’s tights on a sunset flip attempt. Since it’s PG, we can assume it was an accident. We can also assume it was an accident because Charlotte didn’t stagger around the ring with her butt hanging out like her father always did. Whoever was announcing the match would note “He’s making an ass of himself again!” Am I the only one that thinks it would have improved the match if she did that old spot?

Sometimes it’s ok to rip off family.

5. Joey Ryan Nearly Kills Mick Foley

This might have been the most talked about spot of the week and I probably can’t call myself a wrestling journalist if I don’t discuss it. Over The Top Wrestling ran a show in Dublin, Ireland last weekend that featured all sorts of wrestling stars. Two of them were the Hardcore Legend Mick Foley & the Softcore Legend Joey Ryan. These guys were bound to interact and blow up the Internet, and the result was caught on video…

Some people were overjoyed. Some people were disgusted. All I could think was of how close Mick Foley’s head got to the mat there. Dude nearly got dropped on his head by Joey Ryan’s member. What the hell is going on here? Not only was it a silly move to be taking, but the man could have been paralyzed taking it. How would that look in a Wikipedia entry? “Foley was seriously injured after taking a dickplex from Joey Ryan.” No, no, that just doesn’t work at all.

All I’m saying is that Joey Ryan needs to be careful with the people he’s flipping around. People are not used to taking that move, not even wrestling legends like Mick Foley that have taken every move in the book. He also has to be careful because Foley isn’t well enough to make a comeback to WWE. One wrong move could put that man in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Why be reckless about it? Be safe.
