Csonka’s NJPW NJ Cup (Day 4) Review

OFFICIAL RESULTS
NJ Cup Tournament Match: Toru Yano defeated Davey Boy Smith Jr @ 5:40 via pin [*]
NJ Cup Tournament Match: Colt Cabana defeated Togi Makabe @ 7:35 via pin [**]
NJ Cup Tournament Match: Minoru Suzuki defeated Satoshi Kojima @ 13:50 via pin [***¼]

Toru Yano vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr: Smith chases Yano, they run back into the ring and both pick up near falls. They brawl to the floor, where Smith takes control. Back in and Yano rakes the eyes, gets some tape but Smith cuts him off, brawling back to the floor. Smith slams Yano knee first onto the announce table, rolls him back in and Yano runs Smith into the exposed buckle and rolls him up for 2. Smith then hits a reverse DDT for 2. Yano then gets a series of cradles for 2. Yano then rolls him up for the win. Toru Yano defeated Davey Boy Smith Jr @ 5:40 via pin [*] The sublime master thief makes Smith his bitch again, but there wasn’t much to it at all.

Togi Makabe vs. Colt Cabana: They lock up and Makabe hits a shoulder tackle. Cabana runs the misdirection, and rolls up Makabe for 2. Cabana works into counters, but Makabe grounds him. Cabana counters out, but Makabe dumps him. Back in and Makabe lays in rights, and then attacks the knee. He follows with elbows, chops, but Cabana fired back and gets a sunset flip for 2. Cabana follows with jabs, the elbows and hits the splash for 2. He lays the boots to Makabe, follows with chops and Makabe fires up and they trade. Makabe hits a lariat, follows with mounted strikes, and then the powerslam gets 2. Makabe looks for the spider German, Cabana fights him off and Cabana misses the moonsault and Makabe hits a lariat for 2. The DVD follows, Makabe misses the king kong knee drop, and Cabana gets the Superman pin for the win. Colt Cabana defeated Togi Makabe @ 7:35 via pin [**] This was ok, but felt rather lethargic.

Minoru Suzuki vs. Satoshi Kojima: They brawl right away, trading strikes and chops. Kojima hits a slam, but Suzuki lays in kicks. Tackle by Kojima, he lays the boots to Suzuki, but Suzuki pulls him to the apron. He follows with the hanging arm bar and kicks Kojima to the floor. They brawl at ringside; Suzuki gets a chair and works over Kojima in the crowd, breaking the chair. Suzuki rolls back in, Kojima barely beats the count and Suzuki lays the boots to him. He follows with strikes, more kicks, but Kojima blocks the PK and hits a DDT. He follows with machinegun chops, Suzuki is pissed and fires back with elbows. More chops by Kojima, hits the running forearm, but Suzuki cuts off the elbow drop. The running boot follows, they trade and Kojima hits a slam, back up top and the elbow drop gets 2. They fire up and trade strikes, just lighting each other up. Suzuki drops him, continues to throw and Kojima is rocked. Suzuki blocks the cutter, locks on the sleeper, but Kojima escapes and hits the cutter. The brainbuster follows for 2. Suzuki blocks the lariat, Kojima counters the Gotch and follows with a lariat. He hits another and that gets a good near fall. Suzuki counters, sleeper, Gotch piledriver and Kojima Is done. Minoru Suzuki defeated Satoshi Kojima @ 13:50 via pin [***¼] This was a good, hard-hitting, back and forth match with a fun closing stretch.

SANADA vs. Hirooki Goto: They stall, playing to the crowd. They finally lock up, Goto looks to work the arm, and work into some back and forth. Goto follows with kicks, and then elbows. SANADA fires back, trips him up and Goto fights off paradise lock. SANADA dumps him and follows with an apron cannonball. He then whips Goto to the barricade. Back in and SANADA covers for 2. SANADA grounds things, and the dropkick gets 2. He lays in rights, Goto fires back and they fight over a suplex, and Goto hits a lariat. Follows with a spin kick, and the Saito suplex follows for 2. SANADA fights off ushigoroshi, and the dropkick connects. He follows with a plancha, rolls him back in, and covers for 2. They trade strikes, and SANADA finally takes him down. SANADA now works him over in the corner, they trade elbow strikes, and SANADA drops him with a big uppercut. Goto counters the missile dropkick, but SANADA counters ushigoroshi and hits one of his own. Skull end follows, he drops down and Goto struggles, SANADA lets go and the moonsault misses. Goto then follows with a lariat. He fires up, but SANADA counters into skull end again. Goto counters out, they work into counters, and Goto hits ushigoroshi. Goto lays in kicks, but SANADA counters GTR and hits the anarchist suplex. Head butt by Goto, they work into a series of counters and SANADA gets skull end. He drops down, releases, and the moonsault connects for the win. SANADA defeated Hirooki Goto @ 20:45 via pin [***½] This ended up being a very good match between evenly matched opponents, with really well done counters between the GTR & skull end.
