Csonka’s NJPW Road to New Beginning 2.05.20 Review

– Yuya Uemura defeated Gabriel Kidd @ 9:10 via submission [***]

Yuya Uemura vs. Gabriel Kidd: They work into an early stalemate, working into counters and grappling exchanges until Kidd finally grounds things. Uemura battles back, taking control on the ground until they separate. Kidd follows with strikes, Uemura cuts him off with a slam and hip toss for 2. He follows with elbow strikes, but Kidd cuts him off with the dropkick. He follows with uppercuts, tackles, and the half crab. Uemura powers up, and crawls to the ropes. Kidd lays the boots to Uemura. He follows with strikes, they trade and fire up as Kidd takes control and talks shit until Uemura levels him with the dropkick. The overhead suplex connects for 2. The crab follows, Kidd fights but Uemura pulls him center and Kidd taps. Yuya Uemura defeated Gabriel Kidd @ 9:10 via submission [***] This was a good, clean opener with a great intensity to it.

Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Yota Tsuji: Yota’s shoulder is all taped up tonight. They lock up and work to the ropes. Yota delivers chops, they trade and Yota follows with a shoulder tackle, a slam and covers for 2. He delivers strikes, but Taguchi cuts him off with the ass attack. He grounds things, but Yota makes the ropes. Taguchi keeps him grounded, working the arm, and then lays the boots to him. Taguchi then starts working the leg but Yota makes the ropes. Taguchi locks on a heel hook, transitions to an ankle lock until Yota makes the ropes. They trade strikes, Taguchi takes out the knee and back to the ankle lock but Yota makes the ropes again. Suplexes follow until Yota counter into a suplex of his own. He takes control, hits the dropkick and the crab follows until Taguchi makes the ropes. Yota follows with strikes, until Taguchi cuts him of and they work to the ropes. B triggers by Taguchi, and bum a ye is cut off with the spear for 2. The crab follows, Yota sits back deep but Taguchi makes the ropes. Taguchi counters, the enziguri follows but Yota cradles him for 2, Ankle lock by Taguchi and Yota escapes, but Taguchi get it back until Yota cradles him for 2. Taguchi gets it back again and Yota taps. Ryusuke Taguchi defeated Yota Tsuji @ 7:40 via submission [***] Another good match with Yota looking good and a more serious Taguchi taking the win.

Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma vs. Manabu Nakanishi & Hiroyoshi Tenzan: Nakanishi and Honma begin, they trade strikes right away and they trade shoulder tackles until Nakanishi hits the slam and elbow drop. Tenzan tags in with Mongolian chops, double teams follow and Tenzan hits a kokeshi as Nakanishi hits the splash for 2. He misses a knee drop, Makabe tags in and grounds Nakanishi, working the knee. Nakanishi makes the ropes, Honma tags in and he starts working the knee. Nakanishi makes the ropes, fires back with chops until Honma hits a slam and misses a kokeshi. Nakanishi cuts off Makabe, tags in Tenzan and he strolls mildly with Mongolian chops. The clothesline and OK BRAINBUSTER then connects for 2. Honma fires back, spin kick by Tenzan and that gets 2. The kokeshi misses, Honma hits one and Makabe tags in. He dumps Nakanishi, follows with strikes on Tenzan and then delivers Mongolian chops until Tenzan hits the mountain bomb. Nakanishi tags in with chops, working both over and hits the clothesline. The dance follows as clotheslines follow for 2. Honma breaks up the backbreaker. It breaks down, lariats by Makabe and GBH follow with double teams, and Tenzan makes the save. Makabe up top an the king kong knee drop finishes it. Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma defeated Manabu Nakanishi & Hiroyoshi Tenzan @ 8:45 via pin [**¼] A slow, but fine tag match with GBH picking up another win.

Robbie Eagles, Will Ospreay, & Big Tom Ishii vs. DOUKI, Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr.: Suzuki-gun attacks and they brawl to the floor. Will battles back and works over Sabre, Ishii and Suzuki trade in the ring, lighting each other up until Suzuki works a choke. Robbie makes the save, works over DOUKI until Will is in and hits a back elbow. Sabre cuts him off until Robbie joins in for double teams, planchas follow and Suzuki works over Ishii Choke by Suzuki until Ishii dumps him. Sabre woks submissions on Will at ringside as Suzuki-gun has taken control. back in and Suzuki & DOUKI double team Ishii. DOUKI slaps him around, Suzuki tags back in and delivers strikes. Sabre joins in and double team submissions follow as they target the arm. Suzuki follows with strikes, smiles and laughs as he punishes Ishii. Ishii fires up and they trade, Ishii keeps walking forward, sleeper by Suzuki until Ishii hits the suplex. Will & Sabre in, Will runs wild until DOUKI cuts him off. Robbie joins in, they clean house and Will hits the back handspring kick for 2. Sabre counters into submissions, Will powers up and gets the cradle for 2. They work into counters as DOUKI tags in, lariats Will and covers for 2. Hook kick by Will, Robbie takes out DOUKI’s knee and Suzuki cuts him off as the heels triple team Robbie. Double stomp by DOUKI and that gets 2. DOUKI hits day break but Ishii makes the save. It breaks down, Robbie cradles DOUKI for 2. he follows with kicks, sliced bread and the 450 to the knee connects and the Ron Miller special finishes it. Robbie Eagles, Will Ospreay, & Big Tom Ishii defeated DOUKI, Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre [email protected] 11:30 via submission [***½] This was really good and tremendously fun with Robbie picking up another important win while advancing Will vs. Zack as everyone got some shine.

Shingo & EVIL vs. Hirooki Goto & Henare: Shingo and Goto begin, locking up and trading shoulder tackles. They trade strikes, working into counters until Goto takes him down. Henare tags in, he wants Shingo but EVIL tags in. EVIL attacks a distracted Henare, follows with a shoulder tackle and delivers chops. Henare attacks Shingo, follows with strikes on EVIL and then hits strikes until Shingo cuts him off and EVIL dumps him. They all brawl to he floor as Shingo kicks the shit out of poor Henare. EVIL posts Goto, and back in, hits a slam for 2 on Henare. Shingo tags in and double teams follow. Shingo follows with a knee drop for 2. He grounds the action, follows with elbow strikes and the senton. EVIL hits one as well and covers for 2. Henare fires back, but EVIL drops him and covers for 2. Henare battles back with a shoulder tackle, tags in Goto and he runs wild on EVIL. EVIL rakes the eyes, Shingo joins in and Goto runs them together. Lariat to Shingo, suplexes EVIL onto him and the spin kick and Saito follows for 2. EVIL cuts him off, hits the lariat and Shingo tags in. he follow with clotheslines, they trade and Goto levels him with a huge lariat. Henare tags in, delivers strikes and clotheslines as the Samoan drop gets 2. Shingo fights off Toa bottom, they trade, Shingo wants more so Henare hits the suplex. Shingo counters rampage, EVIL cuts off Henare and double teams follow until Goto makes the save. Ushigoroshi by Goto, Henare fires up and battles with Shingo as they trade again. Huge lariat by Henare and that gets 2. back elbow and jab by Shingo, the lariat follows and the sliding lariat connects. Noshigami follows and he covers for 2. The pumping bomber kills Henare and the cover gets 3. Shingo & EVIL defeated Hirooki Goto & Henare @ 13:00 via pin [***½] This was a very good, hard-hitting hossy tag match where Henare got a lot of shine, but at the end of the day, he just wasn’t ready for Shingo.

Sho, Yoh, & Okada vs. Taichi, Desperado, & Kanemaru: You will be shocked, but I need to tell you that Suzuki-gun attacked before the bell and they all brawled to the floor to begin. Sho fights back, dropkicks a chair into Despy’s face and works him over until Yoh tags in. Despy fires back, until Yoh hits a slam for 2. Okada tags in, working an octopus hold. He then grounds him, Sho tags in and they continue to isolate Despy. They trade strikes, chops until Despy rakes the eyes and Kanemaru attacks. They all brawl to he floor, pairing off and Suzuki-gun has control. back in and they isolate Sho. Despy follows with kicks as Kanemaru starts working the knee he targeted on the floor. Taichi tags in, he continues to work the knee of Sho, and works him over in the corner. Despy tags in, hits the shin breaker and Kanemaru joins in for double teams as Despy covers for 2. Kanemaru in, more double teams follow, Sho fires back and hits a desperation suplex. Yoh tags in and runs wild a bit, spinning forearm on Kanemaru, Despy in and Yoh runs them together and follows with dragon screws until Kanemaru cradles him for 2. Superkick by Yoh, but Kanemaru counters back into a DDT. Taichi and Okada tag in, Okada takes control and hits the elbow and DDT for 2. Okada up top and Taichi cuts him off, follows with an enziguri and THE PANTS ARE OFF! Okada fires back, Taichi follows with kicks as they trade. Spin kick by Taichi, John Wooooooooo by Okada but Taichi rebounds with the lariat until Okada hits the dropkick. Sho in, hits a clothesline, Taichi fires back and follows with the half crab. Yoh makes the save, it breaks down and Sho counters the powerbomb and hits the spear. Kanemaru makes the save, Yoh in and they take out Kanemaru. Plancha by Yoh and Taichi is taken down by Sho, The German is countered, chair shot by Despy and Taichi hits the buzzsaw kick and last ride for the win. Taichi, Desperado, & Kanemaru defeated Sho, Yoh, & Okada @ 14:40 via pin [***] Good match with the challengers taking out Sho’s knee ahead of Sunday’s title match.

Elimination Match: BUSHI, SANADA, Hiromu, & Naito vs. KENTA, Jay White, Phantasmo, & Taiji Ishimori: Elimination is pin, DQ, submission, or over the top. Gedo is at ringside. Bullet Club attacks as they brawl to the floor and pair off. Bullet Club has control as they isolate Hiromu in the ring. Hiromu runs them together, follows with chops on Ishimori until KENTA attacks. That allows Ishimori to take control back, the rest brawl on the floor as KENTA beats down Naito and Jay works over SANADA. Phantasmo follows with back rakes in the ring on Hiromu. He and Ishimori work quick tags, more back rakes and Jay tags in. He tries to dump Hiromu. He then whips him to the exposed buckle, KENTA tags in, grounding Hiromu. He follows with knee strikes, Ishimori in and controls as KENTA attacks Naito on the floor. Back in as Jay tags in, grounding Hiromu. Every time Hiromu fires up, Jay cuts him off and Phantasmo tags in. The tree of WHOA nut stomps follow, but they can’t dump Hiromu. Quick tags follow, KENTA in and follows with kicks. Hiromu finally counters into a dragon screw, and tags in Naito. Naito runs wild on KENTA, taking out all of Bullet Club and attacking the knee of KENTA like last night. The figure four follows, Jay makes the save and KENTA follows with a DDT. The running boot connects, and then the corner dropkick follows, It breaks down. double stomp by KENTA and that gets 2.The GTS is countered, tornado DDT by Naito and SANADA tags in. Jay joins him, SANADA take out the knee, paradise lock on Ishimori and one for Phantasmo as well. Gedo distracts him, but he dragon screw Jay. He frees Ishimori and Phantasmo, Jay fights him off and follows with a DDT. Blade buster then connects for 2. SANADA fights off elimination, they trade and SANAAD gets skull end until Jay escapes and they work to the apron. They trade, SANADA counters into skull end, Gedo in and Jay hits the floor but the ref didn’t see it. Jay pulls SANADA to the floor and Red Shoes says they are both gone. Ishimori hits the back handspring kick on BUSHI for 2. Rewind kick by BUSHI, but Ishimori counters and he and Phantasmo eliminate BUSHI. Hiromu in, he works over Ishimori, hits a RANA until Ishimori cradles him into the YES lock. Hiromu escapes, superkicks Ishimori and Phantasmo saves Ishimori until Hiromu dumps him. Phantasmo in and trades with Hiromu, high cross by Phantasmo and they trade pin attempts. Backslide by Hiromu, Phantasmo kicks out and follows with a flurry of kicks. They work to the apron, trading and Hiromu send him to the barricade, no elimination. He walks on Ishimori’s back in the ring and gets cradled by Hiromu. KENTA dumps Hiromu, Naito cuts him off and hits the flying forearm. KENTA counters destino, follows with kicks and the draping double stomp misses. They trade, boots by KENTA and he eliminates Naito for the win. Bullet Club defeated LIJ @ 24:20 [***½] This starred a bit slow, but really picked up and needed up being very good with tons of fun elimination saves and teases by Phantasmo really sticking out while building well to Sunday’s big singles matches.

Today’s NJPW Road to New Beginning show was another really strong show, with a lot of good wrestling and angles playing off early in the tour while also building to Sunday’s our closing event.
