Csonka’s NXT TV Review 11.08.17

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Heavy Machinery defeated Sean Maluta & Chris Payne @ 2:20 via pin [NR]
– Kairi Sane defeated Billie Kay @ 3:53 via pin []
– The Velveteen Dream defeated Cezar Bononi @ 1:17 via pin [NR]
– Roderick Strong defeated Adam Cole @ 9:47 via DQ [**¾]

– Follow all of my reviews at this link.

– We get highlights from last week’s show, which was good stuff.

Heavy Machinery vs. Sean Maluta & Chris Payne: Otis in to start and dominates both men, does the worm and hits an elbow drop. Heavy Machinery continues to control and do some goofy celebrating. Tucker follows with a springboard elbow drop. The compactor finishes things. Heavy Machinery defeated Sean Maluta & Chris Payne @ 2:20 via pin [NR] This was a fun little squash.

– Ember Moon is questioned about Mercedes Martinez saying that she doesn’t have what it takes to win at Takeover. Moon challenges her to a match next week.

Kairi Sane vs. Billie Kay: Peyton Royce is at ringside. Kay talks some shit, Sane isn’t very impressed and we get to action. Kay tackles Sane down, buy Sane fires back with a head scissors and dropkick. Royce distracts Sane, allowing Kay to attack and cover for 2. Kay lays in ground and pound, covering for 2. Kay works a torture rack, and dumps Sane in the corner and covers for 2. Kay slaps Sane around, but Sane fires up and hits the spear. Chops follow, beating down Kay in the corner and the sliding elbow follows for 2. Royce distracts Sane again, allowing Kay a roll up for 2. Sane hits a back fist, heads up top and hits the big elbow drop for the win. Kairi Sane defeated Billie Kay @ 3:53 via pin [*¾] This felt really flat. Sane winning is obviously the right call, but this was the same Iconic Duo match we always see, when it really should have been a showcase for Sane.

– In Regal’s office, Kassius Ohno arrives and says he’s been rolling and wants to get back into the NXT title mix. He wants Lars Sullivan at Takeover. Regal agrees. Kassius Ohno was 37.

– We get a War Games video package, with lots of Dusty Rhodes love included. This was a really great video package, with Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes delivering some good quotes.

– We get an interview with Zelina Vega & Andrade Almas discussing their match with Drew McIntrye at Takeover War Games. They are questioned about their past, Vega says she’s known him for 7-years and knows the real Almas. Vega’s confidence and overall poise is excellent, she’s been a great addition to the roster.

The Velveteen Dream vs. Cezar Bononi: Dream takes control at the bell, laying in strikes until Bononi cuts him off. It doesn’t last long as Dream hits a kick, clothesline and then lays the boots to him. The spinebuster follows and then the rolling DVD finishes Bononi, Dream didn’t even need the elbow drop. The Velveteen Dream defeated Cezar Bononi @ 1:17 via pin [NR] Good squash.

– He says he will get what he wants at Takeover, when Black says his name.

– Ruby Riot is out of action, due to an ankle injury suffered three weeks ago in her qualifying match. She’s out another two weeks, and Sonja Deville says she should have tapped out. Riot challenges her to a match when she’s healed up. Deville agrees and says to heal up… so I can break it.

– The Street Profits cut a promo, a guy delivering Tino a suit arrives and the Profits take the suit. Tino and Moss arrive, and they argue; setting up a match for next week.

– Next week: McIntyre & Almas go face to face, Moon vs. Martinez, & The Street Profits vs. Tino & Moss.

Adam Cole vs. Roderick Strong: Cole’s NXT debut was a lackluster effort against Eric Young. Cole is actually out alone, but I doubt that lasts. Aggressive lockup to begin, they workaround the ropes and break. Strong with a takedown, looking to ground the action but Cole keeps fighting out. They both get to the feet, Strong lays in chops but Cole cuts him off with a boot. Strong dropkicks him to he floor and hits a dive off of the apron. Back in they go, Cole uses the ref as a shield and superkicks Strong to the floor. Post break and Cole is laying the boots to Strong. He whips Strong to the buckles, and then grounds things with a chinlock. Strong keeps fighting, but Cole remains a step ahead and grounds things with a head scissors. Cole goes to the sleeper, continuing to keep Strong down. Strong fights to his feet and hits a back breaker to start his comeback. Strong lays in chops, follows with a lariat and follows with rights in the corner, the running forearm follows and another back breaker gets 2. Cole fires back with an enziguri, covering for 2. Strong counters a suplex, but Cole hits a superkick and last shot, covering for 2. Cole is shocked he only got 2. Strong now lays in forearms, the jumping knee and sets Cole up top. Strong follows, and hits a buckle back breaker but Fish and O’Reilly pull Strong to the floor for the DQ. Roderick Strong defeated Adam Cole @ 9:47 via DQ [**¾] This was an overall pretty good match, with the predictable finish. That wasn’t the problem, so far in NXT, Cole just feels… fine. He’s a dude, he doesn’t do anything wrong, but nothing he’s doing makes me feel as if I need to see him when he’s on TV.

– The AOP arrive and we have a stand off. Sanity now rushes the ring and we have the big brawl ahead of War Games. Wolfe hits a big dive, and then Strong suplexes Cole off the top onto the pile on the floor! Everyone is down as the show ends. This was a good show closing angle, but really felt like it should have been the go home angle. Hopefully

– Thanks for reading.

– End scene.

Tonight’s episode of NXT TV was a solid, but largely forgettable show. They set up some stuff for next week and I liked the show-closing angle, I just hope that next week’s show picks things up and delivers a high quality go home show.
