Csonka’s WWE 205 Live Review 4.10.18

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Kalisto defeated Akira Tozawa @ 11:20 via pin [***½]
– Drew Gulak defeated Mark Andrews @ 10:25 via submission [***]

– Follow all of my reviews at this link.

– This will be an interesting show for the brand; it’s the first in a long time with out the MMC, meaning they are back to a full hour. Cedric is the new champion, and with it being post Mania, we could see some new names tonight.

– We get highlights of Alexander vs. Ali from WrestleMania.

– Nigel is off for two weeks, but Percy Watson is here, and is apparently a “permanent fixture” on the show going forward.

Kalisto vs. Akira Tozawa: This is a continuation of the 205 luchas vs. Tozawa & Itami feud. Tozawa has vowed to defeat all of the luchas. Tozawa looks to work the arm early, but Kalisto escapes and picks up the pace and hits a head scissors. They now work to the ropes and we get a clean break. They keep the pacing fast, working counters and Tozawa cuts off Kalisto with the jab and stomps. Tozawa uses strikes to maintain control, follows with a running kick and senton for 2. It’s all Tozawa right now, laying in more strikes and chops. Kalisto hits an enziguri and spinning elbow strike. The spiked RANA connects for 2. Kalisto takes Tozawa up top, but Tozawa knocks him to the mat; Kalisto fires back and follows him back up top. Kalisto then hits a Spanish fly for a good near fall. They trade strikes center ring, Tozawa hits a spin kick and covers for 2. Tozawa misses a charge, eats a superkick and Kalisto lights him up with kicks. Kalisto backs off and charges, but is sent to the buckles. The ref checks on him, but Tozawa heads up top but Kalisto rolls to the floor. Tozawa follows with a suicide dive and apron cannonball. Back in and Tozawa heads back up top and the senton eats knees. Kalisto can’t follow up, as he grabs at his knee. Tozawa now counters a RANA but Kalisto gets a sunset flip for 2. They work into a series of counters, and salida del sol finishes it. Kalisto defeated Akira Tozawa @ 11:20 via pin [***½] Once again, the show opens up with a match that follows up on an established angle. They had a very good match to open the show, working very well together and actually getting the crowd into it, which has been nice to see over the recent weeks. I really liked Tozawa working more aggressively, without going full-blown heel. Kalisto survived banging his knee up and picked up the hard fought, and clean win.

– Next week it’s Metalik & Dorado vs. Tozawa & Itami in a tornado tag match.

– Tony Nese meets with Mark Andrews. Nese wants revenge on Gulak, and tells Andrews to kick Gulak’s ass.

– Gulak gets promo time and teases the PowerPoint presentation. The crowd actually chants for it, but he refuses to do it, because right now is not the time. He is the best submission specialist in WWE, and if you step to him, you will tap out.

Mark Andrews vs. Drew Gulak: This is a rematch from the title tournament, which Gulak won. Andrews runs wild early, hitting a RANA and Gulak powders to the floor. Back in and Andrews lays in leg kicks. But Gulak grounds the action. Andrews escapes, but Gulak looks for the dragon sleeper. Andrews escapes and hits a bulldog. The dropkick follows and they work to the apron, and Gulak posts him. Back in the ring and Gulak stomps away on Andrews, grounding the highflier. Gulak is showing great aggression here, continuing his shift in attitude since the reboot of the show and the tournament. While he did better at the comedy than anyone could have expected, this is where he’s really at his best. Gulak starts mixing in knee strikes, and again, grounds Andrews. Andrews fights to his feet, hits a jawbreaker, and finally gets some separation. The 619 and high cross follows. The corkscrew standing moonsault also connects, and the cover gets 2. Andrews now lays in strikes into a crucifix bomb for 2. Andrews looks to go up top, Gulak stops that and hits a northern lariat for 2. Andrews battles back with strikes, but Gulak counters the tornado DDT, but Andrews hits stundog millionaire. He heads up top and Gulak rolls away. He then slams Andrews to the buckles and gets the Gu-Lock (dragon sleeper) for the win. Drew Gulak defeated Mark Andrews @ 10:25 via submission [***] This was good, they didn’t just give Andrews the win back to even things up and instead just smartly gave Gulak momentum. I also really enjoy that Gulak is a heel just because he’s mean and wants to hurt guys instead of playing off of tired and cliché heel tactics. This also brings us back to Nese vs. Gulak, Gulak beat Nese in the title tournament, and it was that match where Gulak showed his new and more vicious personality.

– Gulak continues to attack post match and Nese arrives and makes the save.

– Drake Maverick meets with Kendrick & Gallagher, and they will be in tag action next week. They promise that there will be no vendetta against Itami for breaking Kendrick’s face.

Cedric’s Celebration: Drake Maverick arrives, and praises the 205 Live roster, and the praises Alexander and Ali for their Mania match. New Cruiserweight Champion Cedric Alexander arrives. Alexander gets you deserve it chants. He thanks the fans for their love and support, which got him to WrestleMania, and his title win. Mustafa Ali now arrives. He’s wearing all black; don’t trust him! Ali says Alexander doesn’t deserve it, he earned it. But there is a long line of guys waiting for a title shot (the crowd chants for one more match) and Ali is in that line. Buddy Murphy now arrives and attacks Alexander from behind and hits Murphy’s Law. Maverick’s pissed at him. This was a fine close to the show, but I felt it came off a bit flat. The Buddy Murphy attack made sense, since he’s been set as the next contender in the previous weeks.

– End Scene.

– Thanks for reading.
