– On the latest episode of 83 Weeks, Eric Bischoff recounted his reaction to Sid Vicious’ brutal leg break during the 2001 WCW Sin PPV. Sid was in a Four Corners match with Scott Steiner, Jeff Jarrett and Road Warrior Animal for Steiner’s WCW World Heavyweight Title. Allegedly, John Laurinaitis, who was a booker at the time, told Sid to do the move despite Sid’s discomfort over the idea. During the match he jumped off the second turnbuckle and tried to do a big boot on Steiner, but landed awkwardly on one foot and gruesomely broke the leg in half. It’s an infamous injury that is extremely difficult to watch.

Sid retired at the time (though he would return to the ring in 2005) and sued WCW, claiming that he was ordered by Laurinaitis to do the move over his objections. Sid’s claims were eventually all dismissed in court. Bischoff recalled where he was when the break happened, saying:

“Oh god, I was sitting backstage at a desk where we had a monitor, and I was watching the show. And it was kind of — I think the first reaction was, we were kind of like numb to it. It was kind of like, ‘Did that really just happen?’ And of course, there’s a replay involved, and by that time it sunk in. And then I don’t want to say I was getting nauseous, because that would be exaggerating my reaction. But I was on the verge of it. It was like, sickening. Kind of like the Joe Theismann leg break in the NFL so many years ago. You see it, and you’ve got to watch it, but you wish you didn’t kind of thing. It’s like a really bad car accident. You know you shouldn’t look at it but you do it anyway. And that’s kind of how I felt. I was a little disgusted with myself for having to look at it two or three times in a row. It was nauseating, really.”
