Kevin Owens Makes No Sense

Kevin Owens quit.

You remember. Back on the August 27 Raw held in Toronto. He battled Seth Rollins for the Intercontinental Championship and came up a little short. You know how Canadians hate to lose in their home country. Much like the men that came before him, he got mad. He went home.

The Internet exploded with speculation. What would be next for Kevin Owens? We all knew he could benefit from some time off and a reset. Things hadn’t gone well for KO lately. Since his running buddy Sami Zayn went out due to injury, the most notable thing Owens had done was get tossed off the top of a cage by Braun Strowman. I mean, getting tossed off a cage worked for Mick Foley, but I wouldn’t recommend it for everybody.

We don’t remember it now, but Foley actually didn’t do that much immediately after the tossing. He floundered for a bit trying to be a heel until becoming Mr. McMahon’s boy, getting dismissed by McMahon and then feuding with The Rock. Then he grew into the WWE Legend Mick Foley most people love and remember. Its not the physical act itself that gets somebody over. Its all in the follow-up.

The quitting thing gave people hope for KO. Surely his comeback would be at an optimal time where it meant something. I even saw people saying that WWE might let Owens appear at All In to put the angle over. His friendship with the Young Bucks is well-documented to his longtime fans, so it would have made sense. It should be mentioned that Owens did an angle while “fired” by Ring of Honor where he would appear with rival promotions as part of a bigger story. He had a way of pulling these things off.

Well, those who were hoping for an extended drama around Owens’ quitting were disapponted on Monday night. He came back.

It’s one thing that he came back with little drama. It’s another thing that he came back the way he did. Attacking Bobby Lashley during a segment where he was meditating with Jinder Mahal that was going nowhere fast. It’s like they were trying to get him a face pop by breaking that up.

You almost have to feel bad for Jinder here. He’s been hindered once again, as he’s nothing more than a prop in a story with two people we barely care about. Remember when he was a major singles champion? Remember?

Maybe an Owens/Lashley feud does something for both guys. We all know that Bobby Lashley doesn’t seem to have a reason to be around. Giving two guys that are talented but don’t have much going on a chance to do something makes sense.

The build sucks, but at least there’s a bigger purpose. I guess. Maybe. LET IT PLAY OUT AND SEE HOW IT GOES, PAL!

It would have been one thing if that was the extent of his involvement on Raw. It would have been disappointing, but we could have done some mental gymnastics to make it make sense. Kevin made one more appearance on Raw that’s going to take a performance from Nadia Comaneci to explain.

You might remember that Braun Strowman threw Kevin Owens off the top of a steel cage. Apparently Kevin Owens doesn’t, as he assisted Braun in the destruction of The Shield. In fact, he was one of the first people down on the scene, all about helping the freshly heel-turned Monster Among Men.

I have no good explanation for this. I’ve had a good read on Braun’s actions lately. I don’t know why Kevin Owens would help him out. He’s got reason to hate each member of the Shield. He’s had multiple matches with Reigns, Rollins & Ambrose.

NONE OF THOSE GUYS THREW HIM OFF THE TOP OF A CAGE!

Maybe I’m wrong. But the things that Braun Strowman did to Kevin Owens, more recently, should trump the things that happened during KO’s issues with the Shield members. Rational thinking people, when posed with a question from a recent enemy, would say “Why in the blue hell would I help you?”

There are two options.

1. KO didn’t ask the question & went along with it to create one of those “moments” that WWE loves to do. WWE needed all the heels to beat up The Shield, and whether it made sense or not, KO had to be involved.

2. KO asked the question, Braun said “You’ll get these hands” and KO decided he didn’t want them.

Either answer should make us arrive at one simple conclusion. We don’t need to care about Kevin Owens. He doesn’t matter to WWE. So why should he matter to us?

This is the part where you expect me to provide a reason why. I got nothing. Listen, we can all agree that Owens is a talented performer. Whether or not we approve of his body type or his position on the card for most of his tenure with WWE, we can agree that he is deserving of a spot on the WWE roster, or on the roster of any wrestling promotion in the world for that matter.

Why should a WWE viewer care about him as a character? I have no real idea. I’m not the typical WWE viewer, so maybe one of them has an answer. I don’t. The man has no understandable reason for anything he does. He’s not a viable contender to anything. He’s just a dude that randomly does things based on what’s needed that week. The man makes no sense.
