Leighty’s NXT Level Up Review 8.19.22

-Road Wild Retro Review will be up tomorrow and my recap of Austin’s interview will be up later this evening or early tomorrow morning. Let’s get to it!

-Announce Team: Sudu Shah and Nigel McGuiness
-Taped: WWE PC, Orlando, FL

Dante Chen vs. Javier Bernal

-These two were partners at one point and we get a handshake to start. Feeling out process to start and then another handshake. Side headlock from Bernal, but Chen shoves off and gets an armdrag. Chen offers another handshake and Bernal slaps him in the face. He gets a roll-up as Chen charges for two. Chen comes back with more armdrags and catches Bernal trying to land a kick. Chen slaps Bernal in the face, but sets too early on a backdrop and gets spiked with a DDT. Bernal mocks Chen and then tosses him into the corner. Sudu tells us that Bernal gets his first NXT 2.0 Match this Tuesday, so I mean, he kind of has to win this one, right? Slam gets two and Bernal goes to a reverse chinlock. Chen elbows out and gets a sunset flip, but Bernal rolls through and gets a basement clothesline for two. Chen fights back as he sends Bernal into the buckle and then tosses him to the floor off a side-step. Bernal gets into it with a fan who apparently got into it a few weeks ago on 2.0. So, part of a story then. Chen runs wild on Bernal and hits a clothesline. Double chop gets the pin at 4:31.

Winner: Dante Chen via pin at 4:31
-Weird that they would hype up Bernal having a big match on Tuesday and then have him eat a loss here. I mean, the fan distracting him plays into the story I guess, and I am not sure how many people watch this show, but still weird. This was okay. **

-Axiom gives an interview backstage and he says that he is good at tests. He would have been great at a test on comic books. He goes into knock-off Steiner math promo about momentum and time while getting from point A to B with him in the middle as X. Cute!

-WWE Live commercial!

Arianna Grace vs. Ivy Nile

-IVY IS BACK! Grace dedicates her win tonight to everyone who supports her. I don’t like her chance and neither do the fans: “Ivy’s gonna kill you.” Nile blitzes her to start and gets a roll-up for two. Grace gets to the ropes to break. Nile works the arm and takes Grace to the ground. She throws an elbow across the face and wraps Grace up for another two count. Grace again uses the ropes to slow things down. She does land a boot to the face and gets a trip. Catapult into the corner, but Nile stops it and stands on Grace’s face. Nile lands a sick kick to the jaw that gets two. Slow motion replay showed it landed flush on the jaw. Nasty! Grace shows some toughness as she fights back and gets another kick to the face for two. The crowd starts a dueling chant, but both chants are for Ivy! Grace hooks both arms and grabs a chinlock as she stretches Nile for a bit. Nile fights to her feet and gets a judo throw. She lands leg kicks followed by a step-up enziguiri. Corner dropkick gets two. Grace throws kicks from her back and tries a suplex, but Nile turns that into a Dragon Sleeper for the quick tap at 4:24.

Winner: Ivy Nile via tap-out at 4:24
-Grace put up a solid fight, but Nile continues to roll on this show. She needs to be in the NXT Title picture. *1/2

-Roman/Drew: Clash at The Castle. Speaking of that show, Gunther and Sheamus are going to hit each other very hard and it will be great.

Axiom vs. Xyon Quinn

-Cool entrance from Axion as his gimmick is that he is a real life superhero. Quinn is coming off an upset loss to Quincy Elliot. The crowd chants “Quincy beat you.” Axiom is giving up a big of size here and it seems Axiom is also a math nerd and can find a solution to any problem. He was bullied as a kid and learned how to fight for himself and his friends. He lands a punch which ticks off Quinn. Axiom uses his speed to fluster Quinn and gets a dropkick that sends him to the floor. Suicide Dive from Axiom, but he gets caught with a boot trying to flip back into the ring. He runs Axiom back first into the apron before getting back into the ring. Axiom gets a fluke small package for two thought it took a second as the ref rightly saw one shoulder was off the mat. Quinn fires off a chop and gets a backbreaker for two. Axiom fights back, but gets tossed on his face and gets murdered with a clothesline that has him doing a complete flip. Another clothesline is ducked and Axiom gets a front guillotine, but Quinn powers out. Axiom slides out of a suplex, but gets chopped back to the mat. Twisting Samoan Drop gets a two count. Axiom takes a good beating and sells each shot pretty well. Reminds me of another small masked man that became an internet darling. Axiom fights back and gets a dropkick as the crowd is into him. Springboard clothesline from Axiom and a superkick(called Golden Ratio by Sudu) finishes at 6:10.

Winner: Axiom via pin at 6:10
-I want to see more from Axiom. The fans loved him and he looked good out there. Masked superstars that fly all over the place and can get sympathy from taking a beating works and that’s what we got here. Quinn is on a losing streak which will be interesting to see what that leads to. **

-Thanks for reading!

Nothing great in ring wise as is the norm, but Ivy is back wrecking people and I am interested to see what happens with Axiom, so based on the sliding developmental scale this was a solid 30 minute show.
