Let’s All Talk About Roman Reigns

Hey gang, have you heard about this Roman Reigns guy? Everyone is talking about him these past few days. He must be a big deal. Who is talking about him, you ask? Well, just some of the top personalities in sports entertainment history. Don’t believe me? Well then, I’ll show you. Here’s what legendary sports entertainment announcer Jim Ross had to say, “Reigns is a work in progress and I am not concerned whether he is a fan favorite or villain. I like his work and his TV persona will continue to evolve.”

I have to agree with this Ross guy. Reigns is only 31. He’s going to be around for at least another ten years. He’ll evolve a lot in those 10 years. Right now he’s Charmander. In three years, he’ll be Charmeleon. Five years after that, Charizard will be unleashed. Just look at how much he’s already evolved in the past few years. Three years ago, following the breakup of The Shield, Reigns was a no-nonsense badass. Now, he’s a no-nonsense badass who enters from the back. Just that little change has proven to be so much evolution. In time, he’ll just be in the ring. Like The Undertaker. Everyone loved The Undertaker. And they’re going to love Roman Reigns just the same. All he needs is some more experience, maybe an evolution stone, an item, a potential trade, and a pokeball. Evolution is very difficult and unpredictable. It’s also. A mystery.

Ross isn’t the only man talking about Reigns though. Recent sports entertainment Hall of Fame inductee and current Raw General Manager Kurt Angle said, “Roman has a huge future too. Roman has potential to be “the face” of WWE. Let’s see how he pans out.”

Ah yes. Once he evolves, he could definitely be “the face” of the WWE. I’m not exactly sure who “the face” of the company is right now. John Cena is never there and AJ Styles is no longer announced as “the face that runs the place.” Kevin Owens is “the face of America.” But, stupid Kevin, WWE is an entire Universe. So, being “the face of America” is not the same as being “the face of WWE.” It appears that WWE is currently faceless. Damn you, Hannibal Lecter.

And how does one become the face of WWE? Do they headline three straight WrestleMania’s? Are they the most promoted person in the company? Do they garner the biggest reaction every night? Are they always in the main event scene? Before we declare anyone the next “face” of WWE, I think we need to clearly define what the “face of WWE” entails.

But the talking doesn’t stop with Kurt Angle. Oh no. Even one of the most popular sports entertainers of all-time, Steve Austin, has chimed in. “I think Roman Reigns is going to be a big star—he’s a star right now, but he’s going to be a big star if he just keeps going down the road that he’s going and he’s going to figure it all out he’s not necessarily just a natural to the business, but he’s very very good and he’s only going to get better.”

Much like we need to define, “the face of WWE,” we probably need to define, “big star.” Austin admitted that Reigns is already a star, but what takes someone to the level of a “big star.” I would assume constantly dropping ratings doesn’t make one a “big star.” Does starring in films make you a “big star?” If so, then WWE films must do a better job at casting Roman Reigns.

I worry about Roman going down the same road that he’s currently going down. In Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge, he tells eliminated competitors, “I’ll catch you down the road.” And then we never see them again. Is Roman Reigns going down that same road? There are a lot of roads in the WWE Universe. There are even Roadblocks, which might be the end of the line. Reigns appears to be in the Fastlane. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t have a Breakdown. If so, we might be forced to push him Over The Edge.

Sometimes, though, he just need to make a left turn. Or a right turn. But some type of turn that takes you off the road you’re currently going down. The road you’re currently going down isn’t always the best. And very rarely do you only go down one road to reach the end of your journey.
