The Name on the Marquee: Mid-South Wrestling (5.22.1982)

-Originally aired May 22, 1982.

-Your hosts are Boyd Pierce and Bill Watts. Boyd is wearing an ordinary brown suit this week, so I’m already giving this episode a firm thumbs down.

SPOTLIGHT

-Paul Ellering is in the ring with the kids again, demanding that they feel his chest. Then they all do push-ups, and Paul has the kids sit on each other to make it harder. He brings two festively plump women into the ring to do his own push-ups. And then they dance a hoedown together. Man, these segments are really going to get him under.

“Captain Redneck” DICK MURDOCH vs. RICK FERRERA

-Ferrara snapmares Murdoch down to a side headlock while Bill Watts surprisingly mentions that on June 15, Dick Murdoch is leaving the promotion for a run in Japan. I can’t remember ever hearing something straight-up announced like that. Murdoch comes to life with elbows and finishes with the brainbuster.

THE ASSASSIN vs. BUDDY LANDELL

-Assassin looks like he’s dropped about 20 or 30 pounds just in the brief time he’s been in Mid-South. He goes to the mat right away with a side headlock. Buddy gets fired up with punches and a slam, but Assassin shrugs it off and loads the boot for some stomps. Hammerlock slam and a series of knees by the Assassin to work the arm real good, and the hammerlock gets a submission. Squashes are pretty one-sided so far this week.

NON-TITLE: BOB ROOP (North American Champion) vs. COCO SAMOA

-Forearms by Roop to start. Samoa fights back with a frankensteiner, but he gets caught in an armbar and Roop stays with it. He slams Coco into place for a Vader bomb, but Samoa raises the knees to counter. Series of splashes off the ropes by Samoa only gets two, and he runs right into a high knee. Legdrop by Roop gets the win. Hey, a competitive match, cool!

ERNIE LADD vs. KIM DUC

-So Skandar Akbar’s hired bounty hunter is apparently now working as a freelance jobber. Ladd chops him and rams him into the turnbuckle, and this week, Ladd looks a LOT more like a guy who belongs in the ring this week., moving around quickly and bending and stretching to do holds. Duc fights back with punches and kicks and manages to get Ladd off his feet, but he misses an elbow, and Ernie Ladd finishes in real American fashion with a big boot and a legdrop.

-We revisit last week’s tag team match, where Ted DiBiase unleashed the counter for the counter for the figure four.

ONE MAN GANG & GRAPPLER (with Skandar Akbar) vs. IRON MIKE SHARPE & JESSE BARR

-Jesse Barr isn’t being billed as the United States Wrestling Federation Champion anymore, so apparently he lost a match in Rio De Janiero or something.

-Sharpe and Barr work the arm over, but Sharpe misses an elbow and Gang manages to get in there. He holds his own well, but Akbar’s men begin tagging in and out quickly to overwhelm him with freshness. Gang misses an elbow and Sharpe tags in Barr. Barr unloads on Grappler with a flurry of punches and flying headscissors. Grappler makes the tag while taking the headscissors and Barr doesn’t see it, so he tries to pin Grappler, and Gang just steps in, drops a big elbow, and finishes it. Iron Mike Sharpe, on the apron, is shocked to find himself on the losing end of a match.

MR. OLYMPIA (Mississippi Champion) vs. BILLY STARR

-Mr. Olympia is billed as one-half of the Tag Team Champions and the commentators confirm that on May 5, Olympia and JYD won the belts in Jackson, Mississippi.

-Olympia takes Starr down in a side headlock and Starr fights it by rolling over repeatedly to make it a pinning combo, but the referee refuses to count for whatever reason and they break the hold. Olympia goes to a chinlock, then a stepover toehold, and he tangles up Starr in a really neat hold on the mat, sitting down with the toehold and bending the leg into figure four position, while leaning backward with it. Watts is apparently bored shitless by this match because he takes this time to brief us on his son’s flying lessons and what type of airplane he owns.

-Series of dropkicks and a backdrop by Olympia, and the sleeper gets the win. I enjoyed this more than Bill Watts, to be clear.

TED DIBIASE vs. THE TURK

-Turk goes for a hammerlock, but DiBiase turns it into a side headlock. Turk takes it down to the mat and rolls over to make it a pinning combo. They keep it on the mat. DiBiase goes for a backdrop, but Turk makes it a sunset flip for two. DiBiase hastily goes back to the side headlock. Turk cracks DiBiase with a STIFF right hand, but DiBiase fights back with a backdrop for two. DiBiase drives knees into the Turk and chops him in the corner. Powerslam by DiBiase gets the win just in time.

Wow. That was a pretty forgettable outing, with all squashes and no stories. Most of the matches were competitive though, which always keeps it interesting.
