The Name on the Marquee: Smoky Mountain Wrestling (2.11.1995)

-Originally aired February 11, 1995.

-Your hosts are Les Thatcher & Jim Ross.

BRYANT ANDERSON vs TOMMY PITNER
-Casual dig by JR to start off, noting that Bryant’s dad has been inducted into the WCW Hall of Fame, “for whatever that’s worth.”

-Anderson goes right after the shoulder and uses the leverage to take Tommy down to the mat. Funny moment as Les and JR are trying to put over Bryant and they’re both trying to wrap their heads around how he would be related to Arn, kayfabe-wise.

-Shoulderbreaker by Bryant, and the armbar gets a submission.

-Jerry Lawler has agreed to rematches against Dirty White Boy on Double Header Weekend, and either he or DWB will defend the belt against Buddy Landell when it’s all over. The people of east Tennessee are jealous of the literate people of Memphis, by the way (and Lawler calls out Les Thatcher for cracking up at this promo) and Lawler even takes a page from the Andy Kaufman playbook by describing how a toothbrush works.

-Buddy Landell makes it clear that even though he’s a heel, he pledges no allegiance to Jerry Lawler, and he’s taking the SMW belt from SOMEBODY at the end of the month.

-The Heavenly Bodies and Jim Cornette aren’t in SMW to win a popularity contest, just to teach Da Gangstas some manners. GREAT line from Cornette: “What shouldn’t happen to a dog will happen to a Gangsta.”

CONFRONTATION WITH JIM ROSS
-Bob Armstrong is pissed off and throwing out fines left and right. Tammy Fytch violated her suspension–$1,000. Boom. Eddie Gilbert’s actions against Ricky Morton are inexcusable–$2,500. Boom. Chris Candido’s attack on Boo Bradley–$1,000. Boom. Da Gangstas inciting a brawl with Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong–$4,500! Da Gangstas come out to declare discrimination and beat down the commissioner, but DWB and a jobber brigade stop the assault.

-After the break, Bob Armstrong is icing himself down and promises some revenge on Da Gangstas—and that’s when Jim Cornette shows up and reminds everyone that Armstrong owes him a favor. He suggests a special guest referee for the six-man tag match at Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Armstrong kind of rolls his eyes when Cornette whispers the name and just kinda says, “Okay, fine.”

BEAT THE CHAMP TV TITLE: “Nature Boy” BUDDY LANDELL vs SCOTTY MCKEEVER
-Title defense #5 for Landell, so it looks like an easy five grand for him.

-McKeever catches him in a hammerlock right away. Buddy makes the ropes and eats a few punches before catching McKeever in a backdrop to get things going. SMW fans yell “Woooo!” after every chop. At what point did that start in ECW? Just wondering.

-Figure four locked in and McKeever submits immediatelty, so indeed Landell collects $5,000 and vacates the title.

BOO BRADLEY vs WOLFMAN
-Bradley takes down the Wolfman, then grabs a teddy bear and flops down from the second rope onto the Wolfman to get the pin. Little Old Lady comes to ringside again. Bradley isn’t fooled by her this time, but he does get distracted by her long enough for Candido to attack. Tammy tries to mace him, but Boo ducks and Candido gets blinded. Tammy runs for her life out of the ring, Boo reaches into the purse and sees what Tammy was planning…so he pulls out the can of dog food that she had in there and feeds it to Candido.

ROBERT GIBSON vs UNABOM (with Eddie Glbert)

-Two minutes left in the show, so this is obviously going to be more angle than match. Unabom clubbers in the corner. Gibson manages to knock him out of the ring and it turns out to be the old NWA Worldwide trick, as WE’RE OUT OF TIME. We’ll see the finish of this one next week.

Another eventful week, as every match and every segment were part of some story and it all mattered. And if you only have an hour a week, that's how it should be. Good show.
