New Day SummerSlam 2017

On the latest Feel the Power, the New Day recalled their match with the Usos at SummerSlam 2017 and their frustrations surrounding how the constant changes to it. The trio were talking with costume designer Mikal Mosley about the Red Lantern-inspired gear that they wore to the ring and recalled how the gear was because they were in an “angry” phase during their feud with the Usos, but that it also worked because they were legitimately mad.

Big E. noted that they were mad not only over being placed on the pre-show when they felt their feud with the Usos was firing on all cylinders, but because they had the match result changed on them three times, including just 10 minutes before they were about to go on. Highlights from the discussion, and the full podcast, are below:

Big E. on not being happy about being on the pre-show: “We were on the pre-show for that one. And we were also angry because we were on the pre-show when we were in the midst of this, at the point, very hot program with [the] Usos. And we thought — sometimes I’m okay with like, ‘Okay, we’re gonna be on the kickoff where we have more time.’ This is the one time it didn’t even cross my mind. Because this program was going so well, I thought for sure we were on the main card. And then when we heard we’re not, we were just more fired up to be like, ‘All right, we’re gonna kill this.”

Big E. on having the finish changed multiple times on them “D-Von was our agent, and we had a finish and [we were done planning early]. And that’s the great [thing]. We love working with The Usos, we love putting matches together with them, and we finally put everything together, we had it down, we have time to relax. We’re on early, you know? The kickoff starts fairly early and we’re before the main card starts. So to be on and then be done with it around rehearsal time. And then, nope! Our finish changed three times. And then it’s not as simple as, ‘Okay, we’ll just change one move here.’ If the Usos are up, the way we wanna structure it, we have to kind of tweak several spots to get the momentum rolling that way. If the Usos are gonna be up, we wanna take more of the match.”

Woods on the timeline of the finish changes : “It was us up, and then them [Usos] up. Like, we had — so we got done with the match and maybe like two hours before the show started, it switched to them being up. And then 10 minutes before match time, it switched to us being up. But at that point we now put like three different backends of the match together. So we essentially like, right before the music hits, they’re like, ‘Oh, we’re switching the finish again.’ ‘Oh, okay.’ And it was like a 25 minute match. And we’re like, ‘Uhhhhhhh…okay, we’ll make it work. [laughs] So then we’re mad in gimmick. But then like, shoot mad. [laughs]”
