Note on Why IWGP Title Isn’t On The Line at AEW Double or Nothing
May 17, 2024 | Posted by

As previously reported, an IWGP World Title eliminator match was added to AEW Double or Nothing, with Jon Moxley vs. Konosuke Takeshita. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the likely reason the match isn’t for the title is because NJPW controls that belt and decides when title matches happen. It is likely that they didn’t want to announce a title match with another already scheduled. In this case, Moxley is already set to defend against EVIL at Dominion on June 9.
There is also speculation from Dave Meltzer that NJPW may not want a DDT wrestler (Takeshita) to go over their World Champion, or there may be political issues preventing a DDT wrestler from challenging for that belt.
