– Speaking with Wrestling Observer Radio on the Jericho Cruise, Sammy Guevara talked about how he nearly signed with both EVOLVE and Lucha Underground before AEW came along. Guevara is of course a big part of the central on-screen power group in the Inner Circle, but he would have been locked down had he decided to take EVOLVE up on their contract a couple years earlier. Guevara also talked about his reaction to Chris Jericho naming him the “Spanish God” on the fly during the Inner Circle’s first big AEW in-ring segment. Highlights are below:

On Jericho coming up with the ‘Spanish God’ nickname: “That was Jericho on the fly. Like, I’m in the ring and he’s putting everybody over. I think maybe I was the first guy he put over. And he’s like, ‘Look at him, he looks like a Spanish god! Look how sexy he is!’ And I’m just sitting there like, ‘Yeah, all right! Let’s roll with this!'”

On nearly signing with Lucha Underground: “I only did Lucha Underground for one season. Because I was under contract with Aero Lucha. If you wanna by some CBD, I think that’s what they do now. [laughs] But yeah, no. And then they went under. So it kind of all worked out. Because I probably would have signed with Lucha Underground, signed the seven-season deal thing.”

On turning down an offer from EVOLVE: “EVOLVE offered me a contract like two years ago. And I think it was either two or three years. And at the time I didn’t have a whole lot going on. So close personal friends of mine in the business were like, ‘Do it!’ I’m like, ‘Man, I don’t — I feel like I shouldn’t take it. I shouldn’t just take the deal.’ So I passed on it and people were super-pissed and were like, ‘What the f**k? This is your opportunity!’ I’m like, ‘No, more stuff will come.’ And two years later, here’s frickin’ AEW and stuff. Who would have thought?”
