What Will John Cena Do At WrestleMania?

John Cena’s going to be at WrestleMania.

I know a lot of his fans out there are worried. After all, he didn’t win the Elimination Chamber match. He came up short at the Royal Rumble. He’s not the top contender for Raw or SmackDown’s major championship. He doesn’t seem to have pressing issues with anybody that would require settling at WrestleMania.

He came up with a pretty good idea on Tuesday night. Inserting himself into the WWE Championship Match at FastLane is as good a way to ensure a spot on the WrestleMania card as I can think of. The downside is that he’ll have to deal with five other people in order to become WWE Champion & break Ric Flair’s record. A one in six chance is better than no chance, but I believe the main purpose behind inserting Cena into the match is making Internet fans freak out & think they won’t get AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura. Unless one of them gets injured, we’re getting it. I sure don’t blame WWE for creating some drama here, but at the end of the match I still think John Cena will be looking for a WrestleMania dance partner.

It’s ok though. WWE wouldn’t dare have their biggest show of the year without one of their biggest stars doing SOMETHING. I’ve been thinking it over, and there are plenty of ways to get the sixteen-time world champion involved. Here’s some of the best I could think of…

Host WrestleMania

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that a wrestler has filled the role. The New Day served as hosts last year, and who could forget The Rock at WrestleMania XXVII? John Cena obviously wouldn’t.

We’ve had some non-wrestlers host the show, but things seem to run smoother with the likes of New Day than with Kim Kardashian. If Cena isn’t feeling up to wrestling, he can use his verbal skills in the role of WrestleMania host.

Team With Ronda Rousey

If Cena doesn’t want to fill one role that Rock performed admirably once upon a time, here’s one that the Great One was rumored to get. He still might, nobody knows for sure & plans change all the time. Or so I’m told. Right now, from the way things are being built up, it looks like Kurt Angle will be the one teaming with Ronda Rousey to take on Triple H & Stephanie McMahon at the Show of Shows.

Let’s be honest. Does that look like a man that’s ready to step in the ring with the King of Kings & the Queen of Queens? Absolutely not. Ronda, first-time grappler that she is, is going to need better backup than that. Why not John Cena? Cena’s win-loss record against Triple H is pretty good & he knows the ins & outs of wrestling better than anybody. He would be a great mentor for Rowdy Ronda.

Wrestle Braun Strowman

Sometimes the best thing for a veteran to do at WrestleMania is put over the young talent. Braun Strowman is a man that has captivated the WWE Universe over the past several months. He just beat the living crap out of people for such a long period of time that we couldn’t help but fall in love. His recent humanization has gotten over pretty well. He destroyed everybody in the Elimination Chamber, including John Cena.

Yet we’re still not sure what he’ll do at WrestleMania. Like Cena, his path to the event is unclear. He’s not the top contender for the Universal Championship. He seems to be starting a feud with Elias, but I’m not sure Elias can keep him occupied until early April. His rumored meeting with Miz seems to have been cast aside. What will the Monster Among Men do at WrestleMania to continue his surge towards the top of WWE?

Beating up John Cena seems like a peachy idea to me.

Challenge Miz For The Intercontinental Championship

The Miz

It’s hard to believe, but there is actually a championship that has been sanctioned by WWE for the lion’s share of John Cena’s career that he’s never held. The Champ has never been the Intercontinental Champion. It’s not that Cena’s opposed to “secondary” championships. He’s a five-time United States Champion & has held a number of Tag Team Championships. But for whatever reason, he never had a chance to hold the IC strap.

What better time to complete his collection of championships than the present? All he would have to do in order to attain the final piece of the puzzle is beat The Miz, and we know he can do that any day of the week & twice on Sunday. Plus, it would wrap up the Cena/Miz WrestleMania Trilogy.

The downside here is that Randy Orton’s trying to win the US Championship on SmackDown right now since he’s never held it, so they might not want to repeat the angle on Raw.

Enter The Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

WWE Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal

Word on the streets is that they want the Andre battle royal to mean a bit more this year due to the HBO documentary hopefully creating more interest from people that weren’t alive when he was the dominant force in pro wrestling. What better way to make it mean more than having John Cena enter it? Any battle royal is only as important as the people in it. Even the Royal Rumble wouldn’t mean as much if it had thirty jobbers & no stars.

Cena entering the Andre battle royal & winning it would make the event more than just a spot to put guys that don’t have anything else going on.

Marry Nikki Bella

John proposed to Nikki at last year’s WrestleMania. It only makes sense to have the wedding at this year’s WrestleMania, am I right? Besides, there’s plenty of precedent for holding your wedding ceremony at a wrestling event. It always works out so well for those involved.

Wrestle The Undertaker

Cena himself said this wasn’t happening. Since this is pro wrestling, that means there’s a pretty good chance it’ll happen. It says a lot about Cena’s verbal ability that he made people want to see a match with himself and a guy that shouldn’t have had another match after WrestleMania XXX.

Let’s be honest: Undertaker is finished. People can talk about how good he looks working out, but anybody coming back once a year to wrestle at his age can’t be expected to deliver on WWE’s grandest stage. Last year’s effort against Roman Reigns shouldn’t have come as a surprise. His promo on Raw 25 didn’t exactly have people running to the box office. He doesn’t have it anymore. That’s not me taking shots at a guy, that’s just the unvarnished truth.

I believe the best time for Cena vs. Undertaker at a WrestleMania would have been XXX. Cena was ending Bray Wyatt’s undefeated streak while Undertaker was losing to Brock Lesnar. Wouldn’t Cena vs. Taker have served everybody involved better? Probably not Brock, but he’s another part-timer so it doesn’t really matter.

Cena vs. Taker this year would get a great pop for the build-up & the entrances. Just forget about the match.

Rey Mysterio?

Just before I finished this column, Sports Illustrated chimed in with their WrestleMania rumor of the day, and it involves our guy John.

I don’t see it. Rey has had his run-ins with John Cena in the past over championships, and I guess if your plan is “Throw John Cena against the biggest name you can find that can still wrestle”, that’s one way to do it. It just seems like a strange fit to me. SI has had their share of scoops, but I’m going to believe this one when it happens & not a second before.

What Do I Think Will Happen?

I’ve already told you that I don’t think he’s winning at FastLane. In all likelihood, something will happen in that match that will set him up for WrestleMania. Let’s run down the other competitors real quick.

It won’t be Baron Corbin or Dolph Ziggler. Cena already wrestled Corbin at a major show to poor results, & he & Ziggler have faced off enough times.

AJ Styles will be facing Nakamura.

That leaves us with Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens. Owens certainly has history with Cena. For the story with Sami & Kevin that’s been told over the past few months to make any sense, they need to be doing something with Shane McMahon at WrestleMania. At one time I would have speculated on Daniel Bryan’s involvement, but that just doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

If Bryan can’t be involved, who better to take his spot than the man engaged to his sister-in-law? Cena teaming with Shane McMahon against Sami & Kevin seems to make sense, and should be a better match than Cena vs. Undertaker. It also gives Sami & Kevin a big match at WM, which considering they’ve been the focus of SmackDown Live for months now, probably should happen.

There are probably bigger things Cena could do. None of them make quite as much sense.

Hit me up on Twitter with your suggestions, or your explanations of Rey Mysterio or other ideas I may have dismissed.
