Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night: Allen vs. Duncan, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. Well last week we had a night that broke the record for most knockouts in a UFC event, the third or fourth time that record has been broken this year which tells you a ton about the matchmaking priorities lately. Tonight we’re not looking at that many mismatches, and in fact there’s a stretch of four fights where at least one fighter has a four or more fight losing streak. There were also three weight misses, including Ismael Bonfim missing by 8 pounds or so which makes me question if he even really tried to hit 155. But the main event is a solid Apex main event as top ranked Brendan Allen tries to defend his spot against the rising Christian Leroy Duncan. Outside of that it’s slim pickings, but Andre Fili vs. Kai Kamaka should be fairly fun, Niko Price is having his retirement fight, and Loopy Godinez is trying to get back on the winning side of things. But mostly we’re hoping for good fights in practice because on paper there’s a bit to be desired.

UFC Fight Night: Allen vs. Duncan comes to the world from the Meta Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We’ve got Brendan Fitzgerald helming commentary along with Michael Bisping and Dominick Cruz while Joe Martinez does the announcing and Heidi Androl is our roving reporter. The Apex still has the smaller 25 foot cage set up, but the newer rules are in effect.

Ernesta Kareckaite has gone 1-2 in the UFC but she’s coming off of a loss and now tries to avoid her first losing streak. Melissa Gatto has gone 3-3 in the UFC, she’s also coming off of a loss and is trying to avoid another losing streak. The odds lean towards Gatto at -125 to +105 for Kareckaite.

Women’s Flyweight Bout: Ernesta Kareckaite (6-2-1, 126 lbs.) vs. Melissa Gatto (9-3-2, 126 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Kareckaite is four inches taller with two inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get things going. Some feints from both women as they circle. Kareckaite avoids a takedown then pushes Gatto into a clinch on the fence. A few knees go back and forth then Kareckaite lands a left hand. After a bit Kareckaite pulls free, Gatto then pushes into a clinch of her own and things hit the fence. Kareckaite grabs the fence to counter a takedown, she lands on top and the ref halts the action to take a point from Kareckaite. Well ruled, he’d warned her a few times in the clinch and that completely reversed the takedown. They restart at distance. Kareckaite pushes forward and both women land punches then Kareckaite pushes into a clinch. Elbows are traded as they jockey for position. More elbows go back and forth then Gatto looks to level change, she tries a takedown but Kareckaite counters legally this time and gets on top in full guard. A few body blows from Kareckaite but nothing serious, Gatto has her head clamped down and is controlling posture. Gatto looks to angle for an armbar, she’s got the angle for it but her grip is on the opposite arm. There’s a weird americana style attack going from Gatto as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Gatto after the point deduction but could be 9-9

ROUND TWO: Kareckaite pushes forward early, both women land punches in close. Gatto misses a takedown attempt. Calf kick from Gatto. They trade rights. Inside leg kick from Gatto. Kareckaite lands a left hook in close. Left hand from Kareckaite in close. Gatto tries a takedown, Kareckaite defends though. Gatto pushes into a clinch on the fence. A few body blows go back and forth then Kareckaite spins free. Bit of a right hand from Kareckaite. Kareckaite lands a right uppercut. Gatto tries a spinning attack that doesn’t quite land. Bit of a head kick from Kareckaite. Gatto clinches again, Kareckaite lands a few knees then a right hand as they break. Left hook from Kareckaite. Gatto tries another takedown, Kareckaite defends then Gatto pulls guard. Gatto kicks Kareckaite off, Kareckaite stands over her landing leg kicks for a bit before making Gatto stand. Body kick from Kareckaite. Combination from Kareckaite then Gatto grabs another clinch. They’ll end the round in the clinch.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Kareckaite, 19-18 Gatto overall

ROUND THREE: Both women come out and trade punches. Right hand from Kareckaite in close stuns Gatto for a second. Another right from Kareckaite then a front kick. Kareckaite lands a left hand, she’s rolling down hill a bit now. Gatto forces a clinch to the fence to slow that down. Gatto tries a takedown, she gets Kareckaite down this time then moves to the back with one hook in. Both hooks now for Gatto. A lot of hand fighting going on here. Kareckaite breaks one of the hooks then tries to spin in but a strong crossface from Gatto stifles that and lets her retain the back. Kareckaite rolls and gets half guard. Gatto attacks an arm triangle then uses that to pass to side control. Armbar attack from Gatto, short time though and Kareckaite defends until the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Gatto, 29-27 Gatto overall but a draw is very much on the table

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – DRAW, majority, (29-27 Gatto, 28-28 x2)

I can see Kareckaite winning the first, it was a close round and the point deduction made all the difference.

Daria Zhelezniakova has traded wins and losses while going 2-2 in the UFC, she’s hoping that pattern will hold here as she’s coming off of a loss and is trying to avoid her first losing streak. Alice Pereira has gone 1-1 in the UFC, she had a pretty poor debut last year but rebounded with a nice knockout via knee earlier this year and now she’s trying to build her first UFC winning streak. Pereira is a slight favorite at -135 to +110 on Zhelezniakova.

Women’s Bantamweight Bout: Alice Pereira (6-1, 136 lbs.) vs. #15 Daria Zhelezniakova (10-3, 136 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Zhelezniakova is an inch taller while Pereira has three inches of reach advantage, Pereira is also a decade younger at just 20. Circling from Pereira and both women fire punches. Zhelezniakova shows a few kicks while looking to back Pereira up. Both women swing punches in close that don’t quite land flush. Pereira wobbles Zhelezniakova with a hook but gets overzealous trying to follow up and forces a clinch to the cage. Takedown from Pereira into half guard. Not much going on here, just control from Pereira. A few shoulder strikes from Pereira as she’s trying to pass. Pereira is able to move to full mount and drops a few elbows. Zhelezniakova gives up the back briefly, she’s trying to catch half guard but can’t quite get the leg. A few more elbows from Pereira land as the round ends and Zhelezniakova is cut open now.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Pereira but a marginal one

ROUND TWO: That cut is up on the forehead of Zhelezniakova, so unlikely to be a fight stopper unless it’s really deep but it’ll bleed a lot. The ref asks her if she can continue and she says no so we’re done.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Alice Pereira via TKO, retirement due to cuts, at 5:00 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Ms. Pereira for her work. Mic time for Pereira and the translator, she’s happy with the performance and is looking forward to continuing to grow as she’s only 20. She talks us through the finish and says the division is alive because she’s here.

RJ Harris is undefeated including a successful UFC debut a few months ago, now he’s trying to remain perfect and start solidifying himself as a prospect in a division that always needs help. Allen Frye Jr. suffered his first loss in his UFC debut in December of last year, now after a couple of fizzled fights he’s finally back and hoping for more success from his sophomore outing. Harris is actually the biggest favorite on the card at -370 while +290 on Frye might tempt some people given the volatility at heavyweight.

Heavyweight Bout: Allen Frye Jr. (6-1, 246 lbs.) vs. RJ Harris (6-0, 261 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Frye is two inches taller with an inch and a half of reach advantage, Harris is also about 20 pounds heavier. I’m calling some BS on the height measurement on Frye. Harris lands a right hand. They trade calf kicks then Harris lands a hard jab and more calf kicks. Right hand from Harris then a bit of a left hook. Frye lands a right hand. Calf kick from Harris again. Harris misses a few punches then lands a front kick. Combination from Harris mostly lands. Frye keeps moving and lands a jab. Counter left from Frye. Hard right from Frye gets Harris backing up. Hard counters again from Frye drop Harris, he gets on top and puts Harris out with punches.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Allen Frye Jr. via KO, punches, at 2:59 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Frye for his work. Mic time for Frye, he says he had to stay patient and find openings, then he talks us through the finish.

Felipe Franco has gone 1-1 in the UFC but loss was a short notice affair up at heavyweight and back at his more natural weight class he got a solid win back in July. Franco is trying to build his first UFC winning streak and prove he’s a prospect of note. Brendson Ribeiro took this fight on short notice, which contributed to his weight miss I’m sure, but he’s also on a four fight losing streak and if he loses again here along with the weight miss it could easily send him out of the UFC. Franco is the biggest favorite on the card at -360 Ribeiro’s +280.

Light Heavyweight Bout: Felipe Franco (11-2, 205 lbs.) vs. Brendson Ribeiro (17-11 1 NC, 208.5 lbs.)*

ROUND ONE: Ribeiro is an inch and a half taller with four inches of reach advantage, he also missed weight. They touch gloves to get going. Some feinting from both men early. Bit of a right uppercut from Franco. Ribeiro lands a calf kick. A bit of stance switching from Franco, he’s mostly orthodox still though. Franco tries a double leg but Ribeiro jumps for a guillotine, he rolls to full mount with it and gets the tap.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Brendson Ribeiro via Submission, guillotine choke, at 1:49 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Ribeiro for his work. Mic time for Ribeiro and the translator, he thanks God and the UFC then apologizes for missing weight but notes the short notice was the reason. He talks us through the finish and talks about how bad this last year was for him as he lost two of his aunts and he’s had a brother missing since April and they still don’t know what happened to him or where he is. That’s incredibly tough, my heart goes out to him. To close he puts over his team and family.

Niko Price is on a four fight losing streak, he briefly retired after his last fight but came back because I believe this is the last fight on his contract so he can retire and be out from under the UFC here. He’ll be looking for a win but winning retirement bouts are the exception rather than the rule. Leon Shahbazyan had a four fight winning streak violently snapped in his UFC debut when Levan Chokheli brutalized him in the first round, now he’s back in action and looking for that all important first UFC win. The odds are with Shahbazyan at -150 to +125 on Price.

Welterweight Bout: Niko Price (16-11 2 NC, 170.5 lbs.) vs. Leon Shahbazyan (12-5, 171 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Shahbazyan is four inches taller while Price has an inch and a half of reach advantage, Shahbazyan is also 7 years younger. Quick pressure from Price and he punches into a clinch. Elbows from Price, he unloads more. Shahbazyan tries to attack an arm but Price punches free then unloads more elbows and punches. Price is postured up in the guard and looking to drop more punches. Shahbazyan is covering up but not attacking much and Price keeps throwing punches until the ref steps in.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Niko Price via TKO, punches, at 1:58 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Price for his work. Mic time for Price, he gives glory to God and sends love to his family who are in the cage with him for his retirement bout. He talks about his UFC career which spans 10 years, then when asked if he’s really retired he equivocates a bit. He talks us through the finish, Bisping asks Price’s family to chime in and Price says you might see him again.

Francisco Prado has gone just 1-5 in the UFC and is on a four fight losing streak, he could very well be fighting for his job here all things considered. Ismael Bonfim had one of the worst weight misses in recent memory as he missed by 8 pounds or so, he’s also on a three fight losing streak and missed weight a couple of fights ago, now he’s likely fighting for his job. Close one here, -140 on Prado to +120 for Bonfim.

Lightweight Bout: Francisco Prado (12-5, 155 lbs.) vs. Ismael Bonfim (20-7, 163.5 lbs.)*

ROUND ONE: Prado is two inches taller while Bonfim has two and a half inches of reach advantage, Bonfim also badly missed weight. Some feints and forward motion from Prado early. They trade calf kicks again. Bit of an uppercut from Prado. Prado avoids a punch then lands a left hook. Takedown from Prado into the ride. Bonfim tries to granby roll but gets smothered. Some punches from Prado land, then an elbow. Bonfim is able to wall walk to a knee but Prado is keeping the ride and lands some knees to the leg and body. Bonfim gets upright but Prado with a high amplitude takedown into full guard. Elbows from Prado, he passes guard and keeps unloading from the ride. Bonfim is done, something’s off as he tries to roll and Prado keeps punching until the ref steps in.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Francisco Prado via TKO, punches and elbows, at 4:23 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Prado for his work. Mic time for Prado and the translator, he loves to fight like this then says he wants to fight his brother Drew Dober. They do have a bit of a physical resemblance. He puts over the UFC and says he could do some announcing in Spanish in the future. Asked about Bonfim’s weight miss he says beating a guy who missed weight by that much deserves a bonus. If you’re going to ask for a bonus then that might be the way to do it.

Julius Walker has gone 1-3 in the UFC and is on a two fight losing streak, he really needs to get a win here and to start finding his footing in the UFC. Gerald Meerschaert is on a five fight losing streak, he’s moving up to light heavyweight here and hoping to extend his career a little longer up in the less competitive division. Walker is the -310 favorite while Meerschaert’s comeback sits at +250.

Light Heavyweight Bout: Gerald Meerschaert (37-22, 205.5 lbs.) vs. Julius Walker (7-3, 205.5 lbs.)

Walker doesn’t need much time then we’re back to fighting. Both men land punches in close. Walker clinches again and takes Meerschaert down into full guard. Some elbows from Walker, Meerschaert is trying to angle and grabs at an armbar but Walker slams free and resumes swinging hammer fists. A few more elbows from Walker, Meerschaert is blocking a lot of these but he’s not getting much offense going. Can opener to more elbows from Walker, that’s a fun little tactic that more people are using these days. Walker moves to half guard and hits the body a few times then attacks an arm triangle. Meerschaert is defending but Walker moves to full mount with the attack then gift wraps Meerschaert and lands a few blows. Meerschaert is able to shrimp to guard. Walker with a few more punches from top to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Walker but a marginal one

Takedown from Walker into half guard. Some more punches and elbows from Walker, he gets enough off in rapid succession to prompt the mercy stoppage.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Julius Walker via TKO, punches and elbows, at 3:35 of Round 2

Mic time for Walker, he quickly mentions his oldest daughter lost her mother recently and he advocates for mental health then says they’re going to Disneyland. Meerschaert has taken off the gloves so Walker is trying to give him time to talk. Walker talks us through being aware of the submissions but once he felt fairly safe he could unload. He doesn’t ask for money but would like a couple of minutes of Dana White’s time for a favor. To close he talks us through the finish.

They do give Meerschaert some mic time after his 60th professional MMA fight, he says he’s retiring and had a good run overall. He jokes about maybe moving up to light heavyweight earlier, but you can’t fight forever. He’s had good opportunities, and says he’ll miss this but it’s time to move on.

Malcolm Wellmaker has gone 2-2 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight losing streak and really needs a win here to try and regain the momentum he had for most of last year. Otari Tanzilovi dropped his UFC debut a few months back but now he’s back in action and looking for that first UFC win. The odds like Wellmaker at -220 to a +180 payout on Tanzilovi.

Loopy Godinez has gone 2-3 in her last five fights and most recently got choked out by Tatiana Suarez, now she’s trying to avoid another losing streak and defend her ranking. The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Allen for his work. Mic time for Allen, he puts over Duncan’s toughness then says he struggled to get going but once he got out of the fog he started rolling. He knew the fight would be fun and hopes everyone enjoyed the fight, he brings up beating a couple of prospects back to back and that’s a tough position to be in. Asked about the future he wants a title shot, which remains a bit unlikely, or a fight with Dricus du Plessis. He puts over his longevity as he’s got 20 UFC fights, then says he always comes to fight.
