Ultimate Fighter 28 Heavy Hitters

The Ultimate Fighter 28: Heavy Hitters Episode SEVEN
INTRODUCTION: Season 28 of the Ultimate Fighter is here. This season will feature women’s featherweights and men’s heavyweights divisions, and the coaches are current UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker battling against title contender and former middleweight The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum. LAST TIME BEFORE THE BASEBALL BREAK, Leah Letson defeated Bea Malecki via unanimous decision. This week, Juan Francisco Espino Diepa (8-1, 0-0 TUF) vs. Ben Sosoli (6-2 MMA, 0-0 TUF).

– Leah Letson arrives at the house, wearing the wounds from her fight, looking like Rocky. The house jokes about it and Bea Malecki, who lost, at least felt like she accomplished something in the fight.

– Juan Francisco Espino Diepa is relaxing and meditating as he prepares to train for his fight. This leads to home video from the Canary Islands, which is beautiful. His mom isn’t crazy he’s a fighter, but loves and supports him anyway. He sees TUF as his big opportunity to succeed for both he and his family.

– We now see Ben Sosoli training, Gastelum feels for Sosoli to win he’ll have to go into a war to do so. Gastelum has a lot of faith in him, but knows Juan is no joke. Sosoli knows he has to stay off of his back to win.

– Sosoli started out as a ruby player, destroyed his knee and it was never the same, and got into MMA. We get home video of Sosoli in Australia. He has a lady friend/partner, and raise two daughters together. He has 5 kids overall, and doesn’t see the other three because of a bad relationship with their mother.

– Maurice Greene is drinking a lot and complaining about Juan Francisco Espino Diepa. He thinks Juan is fake and not friendly, likely because Juan is focusing on his fight and not sitting around drinking. Juan doesn’t give a shit, so Greene does the drunk tough guy thing and calls him a bitch about 2 times. Greene claims he isn’t afraid, and the others really want no part of this.

– Whittaker praises Juan’s wrestling and grappling skills as we see footage of him train. Whittaker says Juan has traveled the world grappling circuit and is highly skilled, but lacks in striking, where Sosoli will have the advantage.

– Back to the house and Greene bitching about Juan. Some of the others calm him down, Greene realizes he’s been an asshole and talks with Juan. Juan’s basically like, “bitch, I’m not afraid of you, I’m trying to keep the peace so I can win this thing.” A handshake and bro hug ends the drama as Greene realizes he’s been a giant asshole.

WEIGH-INS: Juan Francisco Espino Diepa (260) vs. Ben Sosoli (265)

– We get the usual pre-fight warm-ups.

Juan Francisco Espino Diepa (8-1, 0-0 TUF) vs. Ben Sosoli (6-2 MMA, 0-0 TUF): ROUND ONE: Their MMA experience is about even, Juan is a skilled grappler, while Sosoli is a striker, Juan has the height (4-inches) and reach (6-inches) advantage. Sosoli immediately looks for strikes, backing off Juan and closing the distance. This doesn’t last long as Juan shoots and takes him down with ease. Juan works from half guard, landing short strikes and Sosoli has no answer as to how to even attempt to get off of his back. Juan follow with little short strikes, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, smother… punch, punch, punch, punch. They aren’t hard, but they are consistent and always landing on target. Sosoli yells at his corner because they are yelling him instructions in Spanish, which he doesn’t speak. Sosoli finally rolls and escapes, but he’s slammed down to end the round. SCORECARD: Juan 10-8.

ROUND TWO: Round two begins, Sosoli looks tired as he looks to land strikes but Juan connects and they trade. Juan takes him down and again starts landing from half guard. Juan just slowly and consistently landing strikes, Sosoli has no answer to get to his feet. Sosoli tries to keep him close, but just keeps eating rights. He’s slowly but surely getting mauled here. Juan isn’t doing big damage, but is easily dominating. The round ends. SCORECARD: Juan 10-8., 20-16 overall. OFFICIAL DECISION: Juan Francisco Espino Diepa via unanimous decision

Juan Francisco Espino Diepa commented on his win: “My plan was to dominate the fight, through ground and pound. Since Ben is a little guy, I knew if I took him down he would get up really fast. Ben is also really strong so my whole plan was to control the tempo of the fight and keep everything at a slower pace and to ground and pound the shit out of him. The situation of living in the TUF house is pretty complicated. You find your roommate and you become friends and on top of that I am fighting a guy I really like but I have to do this to fulfill my dream of being a UFC fighter. For other guys I have a different strategy. This was my strategy for the strongest fighter and striker. I will look at my next opponent and see what is the best.”
