Joao Zeferino: ‘Jon Fitch Hasn’t Evolved’

April 1, 2016 | Posted by Joseph Lee

In an interview with MMA Junkie, Joao Zeferino (20-7) said his WSOF 30 opponent Jon Fitch hasn’t evolved enough to be a champion. The two will fight for the vacant welterweight title tomorrow night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The main card airs on NBCSN after preliminary fights on MMA Junkie. Here are highlights:

On Jon Fitch’s fight game: “Jon Fitch hasn’t evolved. He hasn’t changed his game, though he is very strong at what he does. But at the same time, I am in constant evolution.”

On not overlooking Fitch: “I’m obviously training for the worst-possible scenario, though I don’t expect I’ll get there. I know that my standup is better than his. I’m faster. I’m better on the ground, without a doubt. But he’s good at making things boring. So I have to be not necessarily cautious, but at least conscious of what he could do. He’s difficult to finish. He’s a grinder. But once I’m there, I’ll look to finish him wherever the fight goes.”

On fighting for a belt: “Fighting for the 170-pound belt now is another great opportunity. Jon Fitch is an excellent opponent. He’s a renowned opponent. A victory over him while getting the belt will raise my profile even more. I am pretty excited for this fight. I was already going up in weight, anyway. I am feeling very strong at welterweight. I’ll be very prepared. Without a doubt, it’s a unique opportunity for me.”
