Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 329, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. It’s International Fight Week and the UFC has brought a pretty solid card this year. In the main event is something a lot of us figured would never happen, the return of Conor McGregor. McGregor has been out of action for 5 years at this point and his last win was pre-COVID over a slightly washed up Donald Cerrone, plus he snapped his shin in half in his last fight. But the man wants out of his UFC deal and the UFC isn’t going to just release him so he’s got to fight his last couple of bouts. So he’s back, at welterweight now, and taking on Max Holloway. Holloway lost to McGregor way back in 2013 and then didn’t lose again until bumping up to lightweight for an interim title shot against Dustin Poirier in 2019. The supporting card is actually pretty good as well, Benoit Saint Denis and Paddy Pimblett fight in the co-main event for upper level lightweight position, we’ve got a rematch between Cory Sandhagen and Mario Bautista, and guaranteed fireworks between King Green and Terrance McKinney. On the prelims Robert Whittaker moves to light heavyweight against Nikita Krylov, Gable Steveson makes his UFC debut, Wang Cong takes on Tracy Cortez, and we should have some fun boxing exchanges between Adrian Yanez and former champion Cody Garbrandt. Now let’s just hope the action lives up to the potential.

UFC 329 comes to the world from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We’ve got the usual big event commentary team of Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier while Bruce Buffer handles announcing and Megan Olivi serves as roving reporter. We’ll be in the usual 30 foot cage, and Nevada has all the newer rules in place plus a very liberal application of instant replay. If there’s anything new on the regulatory front I’ll be sure to update things.

Alessandro Costa has gone 4-3 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight winning streak and a third consecutive win here would pretty firmly establish him as a prospect. Cody Durden has gone 7-8-1 in the UFC, most recently he broke a four fight losing streak and now looks for his first winning streak since 2023. The odds like Costa at -240 to Durden’s +200 comeback.

Flyweight Bout: Alessandro Costa (16-5, 126 lbs.) vs. Cody Durden (18-10-1, 125.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Durden is three inches taller but the reach is identical. Both men with some circling and feinting early. Some stance switching from Durden as he moves around. Bit of a calf kick from Costa. Inside calf kick from Durden. Costa misses a wheel kick. Bit of a jab from Durden then Costa blocks the follow ups. Durden walks into an overhand right from Costa. Costa misses another wheel kick. Left to the body from Costa. Durden lands a left hand. Both men land in close, Costa is going body to head a bit more now. Costa lands a right hand. Durden misses a few punches. Costa misses a couple of hooks. Durden lands an inside calf kick. Lunging left hook from Costa then Durden grabs a clinch. Costa pushes free pretty quickly then sprawls away from a double leg. Costa’s pressure is getting to Durden a bit. Front kick then a left hook from Costa. Durden lands a knee to the body. Costa with a flurry to the body and head again then Durden circles away for the final seconds of the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Costa

ROUND TWO: Costa gets back to forward pressure and lands a left body kick. Both men miss punches then Costa lands a calf kick. Bit of an uppercut from Durden then Costa lands a right hand. Calf kick from Durden then a one two. Durden fakes a knee tap then lands a left hand. Inside calf kick from Durden, Costa then lands an uppercut. Durden slips on a high kick and Costa gets on top in half guard. There’s a cut around the left eyebrow of Durden. Costa lands a few short elbows and passes to side control. Durden gives up the back, Costa then grabs a body triangle. Choke attack from Costa, he has to adjust it a bit but he does switch his grip and gets the tap.

Ryan Gandra brings an eight fight winning streak into his UFC debut, now he’s trying to keep that momentum going and make a good first impression on the UFC audience. Zach Reese has gone 1-1 with 1 No Contest in his last three fights, most recently he lost a split decision to Michel Pereira and now he’s trying to avoid his first losing streak. Close one here, -135 on Gandra to +115 for Reese.

Middleweight Bout: Ryan Gandra (9-1, 185.5 lbs.) vs. Zach Reese (10-3 1 NC, 184.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Reese is three inches taller with two and a half inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to start. Reese is fighting southpaw. Gandra throws a few rights to the body and head. Left hand from Reese then a body kick behind it. Left hook from Gandra floors Reese and a flurry on the mat to follow up prompts the stoppage.

Farid Basharat is undefeated including six UFC wins, he’s nearing the end of his contract though and if he wants a nice offer to stick around he’ll need to find his first finish since 2023 here. John Garza took this on fairly short notice, replacing Victor Henry, but he’s on a five fight winning streak and could make a big splash with an upset win. Given the short replacement opponent it’s not surprising to see Basharat as a heavy favorite at -650 to Garza’s +460.

Bantamweight Bout: #15 Farid Basharat (15-0, 136 lbs.) vs. John Garza (6-1, 135.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Basharat is an inch taller with two inches of reach advantage. Both men come out showing the jab, then Basharat with a bit of a calf kick. Garza lands a double jab. Oblique kick from Basharat, then a calf kick behind it. Garza lands a right to the body. Double leg from Basharat into side control. Basharat spins for the back, only one hook right now though. Basharat could transition to an arm triangle but loses it and Garza spins to get on top in half guard. Pretty quick get up from Basharat but Garza lands some punches before Basharat finally gets him back down against the fence. Short left from Basharat and he gets to side control again. Garza wrestles up and separates without Basharat getting any offense going. Basharat goes southpaw now and fires a partially successful head kick. Left hand from Basharat, he’s doing a lot of stance switching now as he moves around. Garza looks to get his jab working again. They clinch, trade knees, then both men fire lefts as they break. Left to the body from Garza. Basharat fails a takedown attempt but lands a right hand. Spinning back elbow from Basharat but Garza just eats it. Uppercut from Garza as the last blow of the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Basharat

ROUND TWO: Both men show kicks to start the round. Bit of a right from Garza, he’s still struggling a bit with the range of Basharat. Basharat tries a takedown, Garza defends though then starts hitting the body before Basharat gets free. Garza keeps pressuring forward and hits the body in close then lands an uppercut. Basharat might be fading now, he’s still looking to snipe but Garza is looking to bulldoze through him. Uppercut from Basharat. Both men land rights. Garza avoids a takedown, Basharat gets to the back standing though. Garza lands an uppercut as they break. Left hand from Basharat. Garza lands a right hand. Pretty good right hand from Garza. Basharat hits a double leg but can’t control things on the mat so Garza wrestles back up against the fence. Single leg from Basharat against the fence and he finally gets to settle a bit. Garza wrestles up but eats a knee to the body on the way before they separate. A lot of pressure from Garza now, Basharat just circling. Hard left to the body from Garza, that locked up Basharat for a second. Garza hits the body again, he’s looking to pour on offense now. Basharat lands a left but Garza is happy to punch with him. Single leg from Basharat to stifle the offense, Garza wrestles up and hits an uppercut before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Garza but could go either way, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Garza comes out jabbing again. Bit of a calf kick from Basharat. Garza lands a right to the body. Those body shots are bothering Basharat now given how he’s trying to avoid them. Garza avoids a takedown attempt. Jabs go back and forth for a bit. Left to the body from Garza. Garza lands a right to the body. Basharat tries a single leg but Garza defends. Bit of a left hand from Garza, Basharat is definitely slowing down now. Garza lands a right hand. Basharat tries another takedown but Garza defends then lands a punch. Calf kick from Basharat. Garza lands an uppercut then a couple body blows. Basharat lands a knee in close. Garza avoids a takedown and lands knees to the body before Basharat pushes free. Hard body kick from Garza then he sprawls away from a takedown. Basharat shoots again but has to settle for a clinch. Garza pushes free then lands a jab. Hard calf kick from Basharat but Garza just punches him in response. Basharat tries another single leg and he’s able to finish that one into full guard. Garza looks to kick him off, Basharat passes to side control though. Basharat lands a few short elbows, he’s just icing the clock at this point. The round will end just after Garza finally kicks free and regains his feet.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Basharat but another fairly close one, 29-28 Basharat overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Farid Basharat via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x2)

Mic time for Basharat, he says the fight was tough then says this was the last fight on his deal and he wants another one. I kind of doubt he’ll get one, especially after he says he tore up his knee before this fight. He feels he’s the most underrated and well rounded guy on the roster and knows he can be champion if the UFC will keep him around. Again I kind of doubt he gets an offer, he’s just an interchangeable face and the UFC has a glut of those.

Damian Pinas is on a five fight winning streak including his UFC debut back in February, now he’s after not only another win but to establish himself as a notable prospect for the division. Cesar Almeida has gone 3-2 in the UFC and most recently lost to Cezary Oleksiejczuk, he’s trying to avoid his first MMA losing streak here. The odds like Pinas at -250 to +210 for Almeida.

Middleweight Bout: Cesar Almeida (7-2, 186 lbs.) vs. Damian Pinas (9-1, 185.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Pinas has five and a half inches of reach advantage, and he’s a whopping 12 years younger. Calf kick from Pinas, partially checked by Almeida. Almeida shows some stance switches then lands an inside leg kick. They clash on low kicks for a bit. Both men land body kicks. A trio of calf kicks from Pinas. Almeida lands a right to the body then an inside leg kick. Almeida gets tripped then hits a double leg from his knees to get Pinas down. Pinas wall walks with Almeida on his back now. Pinas gets chest to chest then Almeida pushes free and lands a calf kick. Almeida avoids a head kick then lands an inside leg kick again. That left kick from Almeida is always a dangerous weapon. A right hand from Almeida seems to off balance Pinas for a second. Almeida lands a calf kick. Both men with rights that partially land. Front kick from Pinas. Almeida lands another inside leg kick. Body kick from Almeida, Pinas looks to counter but was a bit out of range. Both men land punches in close. Calf kick from Pinas. Bit of a left from Almeida. Pinas misses a right hand then Almeida lands a body kick. Inside leg kick from Almeida but Pinas intercepts him with a right hand that ENDS things.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Pinas for his work. Mic time for Pinas, he jokes that he can do what Alex Pereira does since Pereira had knocked out Almeida in kickboxing. He talks us through the finish and puts over Almeida. He notes he doesn’t have a ton of experience and is learning a bit on the job, but promises he has a lot more still to grow into. Asked about the future he wants to knockout Baisungur Susurkaev, that’s a very reasonable call out.

Almeida just got a little predictable with that left kick and Pinas finally lined up his counter.

Tracy Cortez has gone 6-2 in the UFC overall but is just 2-2 in her last four and most recently got choked out by Erin Blanchfield, now she’s back in action trying to avoid her first losing streak. Wang Cong has gone 4-1 in the UFC and is on a three fight winning streak, a win here would be the biggest of her MMA career though since Cortez is something of a perennial ranked contender. Fairly close one here, -130 on Wang to +110 for Cortez.

Women’s Flyweight Bout: #12 Wang Cong (9-1, 125.5 lbs.) vs. #8 Tracy Cortez (12-3, 126 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Wang is an inch taller but the reach is identical. Cortez comes out pretty quickly looking to engage. Wang with a bit of a right hand. Calf kick from Wang. Cortez looks to feint her way forward, and walks into a right hand. Wang then lands a calf kick and a right to the body. Another calf kick from Wang. Cortez tries to clinch up but Wang avoids it then lands a right hand. Wang drops Cortez with a calf kick then lands a right hand as Cortez gets up. Body jab from Wang. Another calf kick from Wang. Jabs from Wang then a right hand behind one. Another calf kick from Wang. Cortez keeps pressing forward and trying to brawl, she finally lands a right hand at least. Wang with a left to the body then a right hand. Cortez gets close and flurries a bit. Jab from Wang then an inside leg kick. Bit of a calf kick from Wang, then a hard calf kick. Body kick from Wang. Wang with a right to the body as both women throw. Another calf kick and jab from Wang. Jabs from Wang while she stays mobile. Cortez walks into a knee but forces a clinch, then Wang pushes things to the fence. They jockey for position, Cortez tries an inside trip but settles for grabbing a front headlock while standing. Wang gets her head free and hits the body a few times as the round ends in the clinch.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Wang

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves for the second round. Cortez looks to swing but falls short. Wang with a jab then avoids some punches. Cortez lands a body kick. Wang with a right hand that off balances Cortez, Wang stands over her and lands some kicks before landing a couple of punches as Cortez regains her feet. Calf kick from Wang then a jab. Another calf kick from Wang, Cortez is hurt to the left leg now. Jab from Wang. Cortez with a knee in close. Both women land lefts, Wang then fires a combination. Jab and calf kick from Wang, Wang is going forward more now and lands a left hook. Cortez starts going forward again, she’s tough but is running out of ideas. Wang defends a takedown, then lands an illegal knee so we’ve got a time out. There’s no debate here, Cortez had a knee fully on the ground and that knee went straight to the face. Cortez is able to continue, and the ref takes a point from Wang which is the right call. We’re back to fighting after 1:06. Cortez moves forward again but walks into jabs. Wang lands a right hand. A few body shots from Wang then a calf kick. Again Wang lands a right hand. Cortez swings a right but just eats a counter left. They trade lefts but Cortez doesn’t have much power right now. Both women land rights, Wang might be getting a little reckless now. Right to the body from Wang. Pretty solid left hand from Wang. Wang lands a right hand. They clash on low kicks then Wang lands a one two. They trade lefts as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 9-9 Wang after the point deduction, 19-18 Wang overall

ROUND THREE: They touch gloves again. Wang gets back to showing the jab and circling. That right eye of Cortez is a problem at this point, Wang is hitting it at will. Wang with a calf kick and one two. One two from Wang. Cortez tries to move forward but walks into a right hand. Wang with an inside leg kick then Cortez forces a clinch that hits the fence. Cortez has her hands connected but Wang pummels to break that and push her into the fence then break free. Body jab from Wang. More jabs from Wang then an inside calf kick. Hard calf kick from Wang and Cortez goes southpaw briefly but that left leg is toast. A lot of southpaw from Cortez now, she’s trying to protect her left leg. Wang with a few jabs and a left hook. Right hand from Wang. Cortez bulls forward but eats a right hand. Cortez tries a single leg against the fence, Wang defends then both women land on the break. Another takedown attempt from Cortez, Wang defends though then separates. A few jabs are traded at range then Wang lands a right hand. Cortez jabs to counter a body blow. Wang lands a calf kick then a body kick behind it. A couple more body blows from Wang have Cortez hurt, Wang has 40 seconds to maybe find a finish. Hard right from Wang then a couple of body shots against the fence. Cortez is able to see out the round with some feints.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Wang, 29-27 Wang overall

Mic time for Wang and the translator, she’s very happy and thanks her team then puts over Cortez. Asked about the future she wants to fight Valentina Shevchenko, Wang did beat Shevchenko in Shevchenko’s final kickboxing bout. I don’t like her chances in that fight but they do need someone for Shevchenko.

Kai Kamaka scored a win in his return to the UFC back in April, now he’s trying to build what would be his first UFC winning streak. Luke Riley is undefeated including a couple of UFC wins, he’s trying to solidify his status as a rising talent with another win. The odds are with Riley at -240 while +200 for Kamaka might tempt a few bettors out there.

Featherweight Bout: Kai Kamaka III (18-7-1, 146 lbs.) vs. Luke Riley (13-0, 146 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Riley is two inches taller but the reach is identical. Southpaw for Kamaka. Bit of a right hand from Kamaka then a calf kick and he goes orthodox. Another calf kick from Kamaka then a left hook. Another calf kick from Kamaka. Riley lands a jab then a body jab. Bit of a left hand from Kamaka. They’re both very quick with the lead hand thus far. Kamaka lands another calf kick. Riley is quicker of the two but Kamaka is timing him well so far. Jabs go back and forth. Left hook from Kamaka. Riley lands a couple of jabs. They trade lefts again. Riley hits the body then both men land punches and Kamaka lands a calf kick. Kamaka lands another calf kick. Body jab from Riley. Riley with a left to the body. A right hand from Riley drops Kamaka, Kamaka fights up but he’s in trouble against the fence. Riley with a knee then an elbow as part of a barrage that gets the ref to step in. Kamaka didn’t like that stoppage.

Kamaka didn’t like stoppage, neither did Rogan and Cormier, but you can judge for yourself.

Adrian Yanez had some hype back in 2022 but he’s struggled to regain it since a couple of losses derailed him. Most recently Yanez fought to a draw that he should have won, but he’s trying for his first official win since 2024 now. Cody Garbrandt is a former bantamweight champion but he’s been very up and down since losing the title. He’s coming off of a dubious decision win but could get his first winning streak since 2023 up and running here. It’s not surprising that Yanez is the favorite but the actual number of -430 has to raise a few eyebrows, and at +340 Garbrandt might be a bit too tempting of a value bet to just pass up.

Bantamweight Bout: Cody Garbrandt (15-7, 136 lbs.) vs. Adrian Yanez (17-6-1, 136 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Garbrandt is an inch taller but Yanez has four and a half inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get things going. Movement and feinting from both men, Garbrandt tries to blitz early but Yanez is able to evade and reset. Calf kick from Garbrandt. Yanez with some up and down jabs. Garbrandt looks to jab now too and avoids a counter right. Yanez lands an oblique kick. Bit of a counter left from Yanez. They clash and both men land punches. A few jabs go back and forth. Hard counter right from Yanez wobbles Garbrandt. Garbrandt backs up and looks to recover. Again they clash and Garbrandt is hurt, Yanez flurries this time and floors him to get the stoppage.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Yanez for his work. Jon Anik is doing the interview, not sure what’s up with Rogan right now, Yanez says he’s here for a reason and knows he’s among the best in the world. He puts over Garbrandt as well, then knew he’d have to deal with some adversity early with how fast Garbrandt starts but once he got hit the Mexican part of him came out. Asked about the future he has no names in mind but he’s got his head right now and takes nothing for granted.

Garbrandt seemed to drop the gloves after this loss, I’ll hold off on talking too much about him until confirmation is given.

Gable Steveson is an Olympic gold medalist in wrestling along with several accolades at the collegiate level, he’s undefeated in MMA and looks to make a good first impression in his UFC debut tonight. Elisha Ellison dropped his UFC debut to Brando Pericic in September of last year, now he’s back and looking for that all important first UFC win. Steveson is a prohibitive favorite at -1600, and frankly that’s closer than several of the gambling places have it, to Ellison’s +850.

Heavyweight Bout: Elisha Ellison (5-2, 236 lbs.) vs. Gable Steveson (3-0, 241 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Ellison is an inch taller with four inches of reach advantage. Both men show the lead hand. Steveson shows kicks and stance switches early. Both men do stance switching now. Steveson with a power jab, he’s moving forward a lot early. Steveson avoids a tie up by threatening a ninja choke. Left hand from Steveson in close has Ellison hurt, he follows up with knees in the clinch. Elbow from Ellison before Steveson pushes out of the clinch. Solid one two from Steveson. Front kick from Steveson, then another one. One of the front kicks goes a little low so we get a time out. That looked fairly legal on replay, more in the hip than on the cup but there was the audible cup impact. Tough call but the ref is standing by the ruling, which is fair overall. We’re back fighting after 1:23. Steveson with lefts again then a knee in close. A left from Steveson hurts Ellison but Ellison lands an elbow in the clinch to back him off. Hard front kick from Steveson, those body attacks are killing Ellison at this point. Hard right from Steveson against the fence, he finally starts unloading and crumbles Ellison with knees and punches before the ref steps in.

Robert Whittaker is one of the legends of the sport, a former middleweight champion and longtime fixture at the top of the division. Whittaker has been with the UFC since winning TUF in 2012, one has to imagine he’s nearing the end of his career and now he’s taking a fight up at light heavyweight to potentially get wins across three weight classes since he initially fought at welterweight. Nikita Krylov has been up and down in the UFC for a while, but he’s coming off of a win and could get his first winning streak since 2023 up and running here. Close one here, -135 on Whittaker to +115 for Krylov.

Light Heavyweight Bout: #12 Nikita Krylov (31-11, 205.5 lbs.) vs. Robert Whittaker (26-9, 205.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Krylov is three inches taller with four inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get things going. Boy the size difference is obvious. Krylov moves forward early, Whittaker circles and jabs to settle things. Right hand from Whittaker but Krylov bulls through it into a clinch. Whittaker spins free and resets. Krylov pushes into another clinch. Whittaker is defending, Kyrlov lands a right hand though and is able to ride things down to a knee. Whittaker wall walks with Krylov on his back. Krylov is just riding Whittaker up and down. Whittaker looks to wall walk, he avoids a bulldog choke and lands a left hand before getting free. Some jabs from Whittaker land now. Whittaker lands a right hand. Bit of a right from Krylov then a front kick. Body kick from Krylov. Hard right from Whittaker. The lack of power seems to be Whittaker’s biggest problem at the moment, he’s landing but can’t seem to really hurt Krylov yet. Krylov lands a calf kick. Short right from Krylov. Whittaker lands a jab then they clinch up again. Some knees to the leg from Krylov then Whittaker lands a punch as he spins free. A head kick from Whittaker lands just before the round ends.

ROUND TWO: Krylov misses a kick then avoids a counter punch. Calf kick from Krylov. Whittaker lands a right hand then a jab to counter a high kick. Krylov misses a right hand. Right hand from Whittaker. Another calf kick from Krylov. Whittaker avoids a takedown then lands a left hand. Sharp jab from Whittaker. Hard combination from Whittaker but again he just can’t get Krylov actually hurt. Krylov keeps circling and lands a right hand. Short right from Whittaker in close then Krylov has a high kick blocked. Flurry from Krylov but Whittaker fires back and lands punches to force a reset. Blitz from Whittaker lands, Krylov is doing more stance switches now as he circles. Bit of a right from Whittaker. Again Whittaker with a counter right hand. Three punch combination from Whittaker mostly lands. Krylov is about out of ideas now and Whittaker is starting target practice. Whittaker misses a left hand and Krylov decides not to throw a body kick to close the round.

ROUND THREE: Whittaker comes out jabbing again. Stiff jab from Whittaker. Right hand from Whittaker and Krylov is a little wobbled now. Krylov avoids a high kick. Whittaker lands another right hand, that gets a bad reaction from Krylov and the ref steps in as Krylov’s jaw might be broken.

Mic time for Whittaker after that win, he talks about moving up to light heavyweight and being fairly small for the division but feels he’s still got the skills. He says he hits as hard as anyone in the division, that’s not true, but he says he’s sticking around light heavyweight going forward.

King Green is a longtime veteran of the sport and is having his 31st UFC fight here, he’s on a somewhat surprising three fight winning streak but a fourth here might set him up for a higher profile bout next. Terrance McKinney has gone 8-5 in the UFC but has never been the distance as a professional and has a reputation as an exciting fighter, though somehow he’s yet to get a post fight bonus. McKinney is hoping to add the veteran Green to his hit list and start looking at bigger names going forward. This was close all week and closed as a -110 pick ’em.

Lightweight Bout: King Green (35-17-1 1 NC, 155.5 lbs.) vs. Terrance McKinney (18-8, 156 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while McKinney has two and a half inches of reach advantage, he’s also 8 years younger. Southpaw for both men to start. Green with some side kicks to the knee. McKinney gets close and looks to swing. Green off balances McKinney then knees him on the way up. Bit of a body kick from Green. McKinney with a flurry in close, his hand speed is impressive. Green is cut around the bridge of the nose. Left hand from Green. McKinney lands a left hand. Left to the body from McKinney. Green avoids a few punches against the fence then lands a body kick. Green’s right eye is a bit messed up, McKinney is landing at the end of his range thus far. Jab and body kick from Green. McKinney lands a left hook. Left from Green. Green keeps landing that side kick to the knee but McKinney gets a takedown against the fence. McKinney to the ride position and lands a few lefts. Full mount now for McKinney and he looks to tee off with punches. More lefts from McKinney then he thinks about a choke but bails on it. Green is kind of stuck in this spot and if he doesn’t address the position he’s going to get stopped. McKinney tries the choke again but Green is able to block that and spin so he’s sitting now instead of belly down. Green lands some punches over his shoulder to the face. Bit of an elbow from Green. McKinney keeps trying to attack the choke, but loses the position and Green escapes to his feet. Front kick from Green. McKinney lands an uppercut. Green with a body jab and front kick. McKinney is stuck and Green hits him to the body which hurts him, Green unloads along the fence and gets the last second stoppage.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Green for his work. Mic time for Green after that impressive comeback, he jokes he was just getting warmed up by the end of the round. He talks us through the finish and puts over feeling McKinney slow down and knew he could get caught up to him damage wise. Asked about the future he feels great and wants to fight in LA in September. To close he thanks God.

Brandon Royval has been around the top of the flyweight division for a few years now, in fact his only UFC losses are to Brandon Moreno, Alexandre Pantoja, Josuha Van, and Manel Kape. So three champions and the number one contender. That said Royval is on a two fight losing streak and if he wants another crack at the title he needs to get back on the winning side of things here. Lone’er Kavanagh has gone 3-1 in the UFC and while he was knocked out by Charles Johnson last year he’s coming off of a great win when he stepped in on fairly short notice to defeat Brandon Moreno, he’s looking to take out another of the old guard here and move one step closer to the title picture. The odds like Kavanagh at -220 to +180 on Royval.

Flyweight Bout: #6 Lone’er Kavanagh (10-1, 126 lbs.) vs. #4 Brandon Royval (17-9, 125 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Royval is three inches taller with an inch of reach advantage. Southpaw for Royval. Royval comes out jabbing early and backing up Kavanagh. Kavanagh fires a front kick. Glancing left hand from Royval, he’s definitely looking to make this a fight early. Both men land in close. Inside leg kick from Royval. Kavanagh is showing stance switches now as he moves around. Bit of a high kick from Royval. Inside leg kick from Royval then a jab. Kavanagh is struggling to navigate the distance thus far. More jabs from Royval. Kavanagh lands a body kick but Royval catches it then lands a few punches. Another body kick from Kavanagh but again Royval catches it and lands a few punches. Royval with a body kick. Stiff jab from Royval. Another jab from Royval lands. Bit of a left from Kavanagh. Both men land in close again but Royval is getting the better of things. Royval hits a takedown into side control against the fence. Kavanagh shrimps to half guard, Royval then hits him a few times before Kavanagh gets full guard. Elbows from Royval, he’s very active with his offense. Kavanagh is trying to wall walk but Royval is keeping him squished down and landing some short strikes. More elbows from Royval then Kavanagh wrestles up into a clinch. Outside trip from Kavanagh then he lands a hammer fist before the round ends.

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves for the second round. Royval gets back to jabbing right away then lands a left hand. Kavanagh keeps showing the body kick this round. Bit of a head kick from Royval. More jabs from Royval. Pretty solid left hand from Royval. Kavanagh lands a body kick. Bit of a right from Kavanagh. Royval over extends on a punch and Kavanagh drops him with a right hand. Kavanagh on top and looking to strike, Royval tries to tie him up in guard and recover. Some punches land for Kavanagh but Royval seems to be recovered. Royval looks for an omoplata attack, at least it’s controlling Kavanagh thus far. Kavanagh gets out of that attack and Royval wall walks into a clinch then both men swing punches. Royval gets back on pressure and punches, he’s a mad man. Left hand from Royval then he tries a double leg but that stalls on the fence. Kavanagh defends then lands an elbow as they break. Calf kick from Kavanagh. Royval lands another left hand then they clinch up. Short elbow from Royval. Kavanagh moves to the back standing then lands an elbow as they get chest to chest again. Elbow from Royval before they break. Royval lands a left hand then hits a double leg into half guard against the fence. Some elbows and body shots from Royval, the man is a dog. Lefts from Royval as Kavanagh wall walks then both men land strikes. Kavanagh swings and misses but falls into a clinch. Kavanagh slips to the back again, then lands a punch on the break. Glancing head kicks go back and forth just before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Kavanagh, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: They hug to start the last round. Royval wobbles Kavanagh with a right hook then elbows in close. Both men land in close, they both get wobbled but neither goes down. More jabs from Royval, he’s more used to the war, then hits a single leg but Kavanagh tries a guillotine on the way down. Kavanagh is really selling out for that guillotine but Royval gets free and starts landing elbows and punches. More elbows from Royval, then he gets to the ride position. Kavanagh keeps trying to scramble but Royval grabs an arm triangle in transition. That’s dangerous but Kavanagh survives, Royval adjusts the choke and starts really sinking it in. Royval moves to full mount and loses the choke but starts landing body to head punches. Kavanagh gives up the back again and Royval goes to a body triangle. Some punches from Royval, he’s trying to open up a choke. Kavanagh is bleeding from the nose now. Royval tries the choke again, Kavanagh tries to hand fight but loses the grip and Royval makes him tap.

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Royval for his work. Mic time for Royval, he says he and Kavanagh deserve a bonus and puts over Kavanagh then thanks sponsors. He then calls out Asu Almabayev, that’s a good callout for him. To close he talks us through a finish and again advocates for Fight of the Night. Thus far this fight is the frontrunner for that but asking for it rarely works out.

Cory Sandhagen has been fighting the bantamweight elite for several years now but he’s struggled to really get over the hump as he’s got losses to Umar Nurmagomedov, Petr Yan, and Merab Dvalishvili which pretty firmly put his ceiling below the title level. Sandhagen is trying to push through that barrier though and avoid his first losing streak since 2021. Mario Bautista is trying to avenge an earlier defeat as his UFC debut was a loss to Sandhagen, he also fell to Umar not that long ago but a win here would help Bautista stay near the top of the rankings. Sandhagen is your favorite at -145 while a Bautista win pays out at +120.

Bantamweight Bout: #7 Mario Bautista (17-3, 135.5 lbs.) vs. #4 Cory Sandhagen (18-6, 135.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Sandhagen is two inches taller with an inch of reach advantage. Some early stance switching from Sandhagen as he moves around. Both men probe with some kicks, just range finding mostly. Body kick from Bautista then Sandhagen lands a leg kick. Left hand from Sandhagen bothers Bautista. Bit of a head kick from Sandhagen, Bautista responds with a lunging left hand. Bautista tries a takedown, that hits the fence though. Sandhagen is able to land a few knees to the leg and body while looking for a trip or off balance move. Bautista gets off the fence and then eats an elbow and left hand as he gets out of the clinch. Leg kick from Bautista. Sandhagen avoids a few punches. Bit of a left from Sandhagen. Bautista lands a couple of punches in close. Sandhagen digs a right to the body. Another body blow from Sandhagen. Another left hand from Sandhagen lands. Sandhagen lands a left hand then they trade leg kicks. Bautista falls short with a left hook. Bit of a left from Bautista in close. Sandhagen lands a right uppercut in close. Both men land lefts. Oblique kick from Sandhagen. Bautista avoids a knee tap but Sandhagen lands a left hook. Sandhagen defends a takedown then lands knees in the clinch before they break. Intercepting elbow from Sandhagen, Bautista fires back with punches then hits a takedown. Bautista to the back, he’s after a Suloev Stretch, short time though and he as to try to switch to a kneebar but Sandhagen defends and lands a right hand as the round ends. For what it’s worth, Sandhagen was limping a bit on that left leg.

ROUND TWO: Sandhagen’s left leg is done, but he’s still out fighting. Bautista with a couple of leg kicks. They trade jabs. Sandhagen lands a couple of hooks but his movement is just not there. Both men land lefts in close. Inside leg kick from Bautista, Sandhagen then lands a jab. Bit of a right from Sandhagen. Sandhagen lands a couple of jabs while moving around. Stomp kick from Bautista. Both men punch into a clinch then separate. Bautista with a right hand. A few jabs from Sandhagen as he’s moving around. Bautista is cut around the right eyebrow. Left hand from Sandhagen, they clinch up and both men land uppercuts then break. Sandhagen defends a takedown then lands a few more jabs. Bautista tries a single leg, that hits the fence though. Sandhagen is able to spin free and reset. Elbow from Sandhagen in close, he’s winning this round despite the leg injury. Bit of a body kick from Sandhagen. Bautista tries another takedown, Sandhagen then spins him into the fence. Elbow from Sandhagen before they break. Right hand from Sandhagen then he avoids a takedown. Bautista side kicks the knee. Pretty solid right hand from Sandhagen ends the round.

ROUND THREE: Some short lefts from Sandhagen as he circles. Leg kick from Bautista. Bautista misses a right hand. A left hook from Bautista hurts Sandhagen, he’s able to push him over then get on top and look to flurry. Sandhagen grabs for a leg attack, Bautista is defending thus far though and looking to punch. Bautista is able to pull his leg free and flurry as they stand into a clinch. Sandhagen misses a spinning elbow then Bautista hits a double leg into half guard. Bautista to the ride and lands a few punches but Sandhagen stands with him on his back. Both men punch out of the clinch and into the reset. Bit of a combination from Sandhagen. Left hand from Bautista then he gets to the back standing and rides things to the mat. Sandhagen wall walks but Bautista is going to mat return him and ride out the clock if possible. Bautista grabs a hammerlock in transition, Sandhagen defends but it was there. Sandhagen tries to roll through a mat return but he can’t get free of Bautista’s grip. Bautista tries a double leg and gets to the back standing again. More mat returns from Bautista, Sandhagen wrestles back up looking for his own takedown against the fence. Double leg from Sandhagen, Bautista bounces up but eats an elbow in the clinch. They break with 15 seconds left. Hard elbow from Sandhagen, he looks to pursue but Bautista gets hits back and hits one more mat return to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Bautista, 29-28 Bautista overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Mario Bautista via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

Mic time for Bautista, he feels good getting the win back from Sandhagen and he feels he should get the next title shot. He mentions tearing up Sandhagen’s knee in the first while talking through some highlights. He again says he should fight for the title next, the man is not going to be next in line for the belt unless injury comes along to several ranked above him.

Benoit Saint Denis has gone 9-3 in the UFC and is on a four fight winning streak, if he can get another win here he’ll find himself fairly close to the title picture. Paddy Pimblett just suffered a pretty bad loss to start the year when he was battered by Justin Gaethje, now he’s trying to avoid his first losing streak and reaffirm that he’s very close to the title picture. The odds like Saint Denis at -130 to +110 on Pimblett.

Lightweight Bout: #6 Paddy Pimblett (23-4, 156 lbs.) vs. #5 Benoit Saint Denis (17-3 1 NC, 156 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Saint Denis is an inch taller but the reach is identical. They touch gloves, Saint Denis fighting southpaw. Saint Denis moves forward, fires punches then tries a takedown but Pimblett counters with a d’arce attack. Pimblett is working to tighten up the d’arce choke, he’s able to get his legs in play and put Saint Denis out with the choke.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Pimblett for his work. Mic time for Pimblett, which is sure to be grating, he talks us through the finish and puts himself over. He says he’d like to beat up Ilia Topuria, rematch Justin Gaethje, or even fight Conor McGregor. To close he tries to get the fans to sing a soccer fight song that no one knows. This is almost as bad as “don’t fear me fear the consequences” in terms of what he wanted from the audience. To close he puts over his after party.

Max Holloway is a legend of the sport, a longtime featherweight champion with several records to his name. Holloway is coming off of a loss but now he’s moving up to welterweight for the first time and looking to avenge an earlier loss in his career. While this fight is unlikely to determine who gets a title shot next it would be another marquee moment in a legendary career with several of them already for Holloway. Conor McGregor is a former featherweight and lightweight champion, he’s one of the biggest stars the sport has ever produced, but he’s also just 1-3 in his last four fights, is on a two fight losing streak, is coming off of a catastrophic leg break, hasn’t fought in just over 5 years, and will be 38 in a few days. A win for McGregor would be one of the most impressive comebacks the sport has ever seen. Holloway is your favorite at -280 to +230 for McGregor.

Welterweight Bout: Conor McGregor (22-6, 170.5 lbs.) vs. Max Holloway (27-9, 170 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Holloway is two inches taller but McGregor has five inches of reach advantage. McGregor opens orthodox, which is odd, he throws a jumping kick then slips to his back on the landing. Holloway gets on top and drops some punches from top position before letting McGregor up. McGregor keeps slipping trying to get his footing, he slips throwing a punch and Holloway gets on top again and lands punches. There’s pretty clearly something wrong with McGregor’s right leg, he can’t place weight on it and the ref stops the fight.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Max Holloway via TKO, knee injury, at 1:09 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Holloway for his work and Mr. McGregor for his sheer stupidity. McGregor blew out his right knee throwing a jumping kick at the very start of the fight. Holloway gets an interview, he tries to put over McGregor and wants a trilogy fight with McGregor but no pop for that one. He jokes that he must have had McGregor weak in the knees. He again says he wants to run it back with McGregor. I’m not sure there’s an appetite for this anymore. Holloway says we can find him at the craps tables since he didn’t get hit at all here.

Watch McGregor’s right knee. My man, you’re almost 40 and decided to come out with a jumping switch kick out of your off stance? Just poor judgement all the way around.
