Nicco Montano Stripped of UFC Flyweight Championship

September 7, 2018 | Posted by Jeffrey Harris

Per TSN Sports, UFC President Dana White has revealed that the UFC women’s flyweight title is now vacant, and it appears former champion Nicco Montano was forced to vacate or was stripped of the title. As previously reported, Montano was hospitalized earlier today and forced to withdraw from her scheduled UFC 228 title fight with Valentina Shevchenko. The fight was set to be held tomorrow in in Dallas, Texas.

Additionally, Valentina Shevchenko is still penciled in as the No. 1 contender for the title. She will fight another opponent for the vacant championship at a later date. The UFC is said to have an opponent in mind for Shevchenko, but the bout is not yet confirmed.

Montano won the title last December in the finals for The Ultimate Fighter: A New World season, making her the inaugural UFC women’s flyweight champion.

UFC 228 will still go on as scheduled later tomorrow (Sept. 7). The fight card will be held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The main card will be broadcast live on pay-per-view. Prelims will be shown on FX and UFC Fight Pass. The scheduled main event will feature Tyron Woodley defending his welterweight title against Darren Till.
