411’s Match of the Week 09.05.11: Year One, Week 22

September 5, 2011 | Posted by Empire Of Ownage 411

Welcome to Week 22, Year ONE, of 411’s Match of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us …

Each writer chooses THREE matches from any promotion and each match gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st – 5
2nd – 3
3rd – 1

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Match of the Week is crowned. But wait, there’s more! Each week, the TOP THREE MATCHES are eligible to make the Year-End Ranking.

The week according to this column will go from Sunday to Saturday, with the column being posted every Monday.

Upon rating matches, writers will assign them with a star rating, and the average star rating amongst writers will be what that match is listed with if it makes the Year-End Standings.

Independent shows WILL be included, but since it takes some time for the DVDs to come out, voting on them will take place retroactively, in which the writers who have seen the shows in question will have the opportunity to vote for matches from them into the Year-End Standings. For an Indy/International match to make the Year-End Standings, it must break an average rating of ****. Nothing will be added retroactively unless at least 3 staff members deem it worthy so there is a consensus.

At the end of the voting year, the match with the highest average star rating will be crowned 411 Match of the Year. In the event of a tie, 411 writers will vote in a tie-breaker.

    1) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (****)
Go figure. Randy Orton and Christian have a match for the World Heavyweight Championship and it wins Match of the Week. These two simply work perfectly together. Add in a cage stipulation, and you’ve got yourself a hella compelling main event bout.

    2) 08/29/2011, WWE Raw – Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler (***1/4): This got a decent amount of time for a Raw opener. Ziggler can hang with anyone, I’m convinced. Orton brought his A-game, as we’ve come to expect out of him this year. As a result, we got a really good match that was full of fun for fans.
    3) 09/01/2011, Impact Wrestling – Christopher Daniels vs. AJ Styles (***): I really hated this ending…but everything up until then was good. It’s hard to get “not good” from these guys. I think this could have used some more time though. Oh well, it’s number 3.

    1) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (****)
These guys seemingly can do no wrong when they step into the ring together. Regular match, NO DQ, Cage match, it is all the same when you have two talented guys that work very well together. While the booking and pacing of the feud was not the best, these guys delivered in the ring each time out, and I appreciate that.

    2) 09/01/2011, Impact Wrestling – Christopher Daniels vs. AJ Styles (***1/2): Speaking of two guys that can really do no wrong, AJ and Daniels also had a damn fine TV match this week. It seems so effortless for them to go out and have a good to great match, yes the continually do it. I also loved the ending with the intentional botch by AJ, that looked very real. Great work by both guys.
    3) 08/29/2011, WWE Raw – Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler (***): Yeah, Randy Orton again. The dude had back-to-back good matches this week, this time on Raw with Dolph Ziggler. Since WM Orton has been on fire with his matches.

    1) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (***3/4)
These two guys have put on great performances every time out in this feud, and this was no exception. From the callbacks to previous matches and a couple of believable nearfalls down the stretch to the awesome RKO off the top (which Christian took like a champ), this felt like a suitable feud-ending cage match.

    2) 09/01/2011, Impact Wrestling – Christopher Daniels vs. AJ Styles (***1/4): Adding to a long series of awesome bouts over the years, Styles and Daniels had yet another fun match against each other on Impact Wrestling. Faster paced and more compact, this one was very different from their match at Destination X. I like the way they are handling Daniels’ turn, and he walked away with a good win.
    3) 08/29/2011, WWE Raw – Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler (***1/4): I’m glad they gave this one a bit of time, and it shows they have some confidence in what Ziggler can do down the road in a higher position. The outcome was never really in question, but Ziggler looked strong throughout. Best match from Raw this week.

    Chad Nevett
    1) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (****1/4)
While I think the logical finish to this feud after all of Christian whining was an I Quit Match, like always, these two brought it in the ring. There weren’t many slow spots or laughably delayed escape attempts, and the final few minutes were exciting to watch with the counters and fakeouts and callbacks to spots from previous matches. The finish with Christian attempting the Killswitch from the top rope only to get RKO from the top rope instead was great. A fantastic end to a feud that always delivered in the ring.

    2) 09/01/2011, Impact Wrestling – Christopher Daniels vs. AJ Styles (***1/4): What I really liked about this match was the storytelling of both men. AJ was very focused for much of the match while still seeming like this wasn’t anything personal, just another match to win. Daniels, on the other hand, was nothing but emotion and passion, wanting to prove that he can beat AJ in the ring. That eventually led to AJ seeming to get a little more invested in winning, leading up to him slipping off the ropes and Daniels scoring the win off a ‘botch.’ During all of that, both men brought it, delivering some cool spots. I still love the look on Daniels’s face after AJ hit the Pele…
    3) 08/29/2011, WWE Raw – Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler (***): Damn, Randy Orton had a couple of great nights, didn’t he? This could have easily been a quick squash match to make Orton look good heading into Tuesday and to keep him rested, but he went all out with Ziggler. Ziggler continues to impress, usually pulling out inventive counters and variations on moves and spots that we haven’t really seen. I’d love to see these two face another again.

    1) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (****)
Amazing! I’m not a big fan of cage matches due to how idiotic some people look when they’re stalling the crawl up the ladder or out the door. Neither Christian nor Orton did that here as they both looked like the were legit trying to get out. Aside from that, the match was spectacular. These guys have been putting on great match after great match and I have yet to tire of seeing it.

    2) 08/29/2011, WWE Raw – Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler (***1/2)
This should really shut some of those up who claimed that I Orton is the Smackdown version of Cena because as you can see, he knows how to have a match and make the opponent look good while still winning. This match was great. I miss Dolph over on Smackdown but it appears that he still has great matches everywhere he goes. Orton is similar in that he has been kicking ass all year long. Both men did their thing and looked damned good in doing it.
    3) 09/01/2011, WWE Superstars – R-Truth vs. John Morrison (***)
Although Superstars is a show where little of note happens, this week they really sold this match to be a big deal throughout the show. When the match finally happened, I was pleasantly surprised to see how well they did. Truth is hit or miss in my opinion and Morrison often times is too much flash. This time, however, they had a great match with a few cool spots and some nice wrestling to boot.

    1) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (****1/4)
Good God all mighty, I stand corrected, this IS the feud of the year because these guys yet again went out and delivered an absolutely unbelievable match with just an insane amount of counter-wrestling, psychology, fighting spirit and everything else you could ever want in a wrestling match. This was off the charts fantastic, and another home-run from these two that stands right up side-by-side with their Over the Limit and Summerslam matches in an incredible three-way tie for the best match in this feud yet. You owe it to yourself to watch this match people.

    2) 09/01/2011, Impact Wrestling – Christopher Daniels vs. AJ Styles (***1/4): When two guys become as familiar with one another’s in-ring work as these two have, it’s almost impossible for them to have a bad match. This was no exception, being yet a very good free TV match that would rank among the best of any Impact in 2011 compilation. Not as good as their Destination X match, or their past classics in year’s past, but still really good stuff and a creative ending as well.
    3) 09/01/2011, WWE Superstars – R-Truth vs. John Morrison (***): This was a toss-up between this match and the short Daniel Bryan/Sin Cara match from Super SmackDown, but in the end I felt the JoMo/Truth match was the better of the two. Really good match in a surprisingly good series of them between these two, probably the best one-on-one non-gimmick match these two have had together yet. If this is the kind of action we can expect from Superstars now that the brand-split is un-officially “over”, I look forward to future episodes.

    1) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (****)
I unfortunately did not have the legal tender to watch this match live, as I had little interest in a Wichita Smackdown show before WWE decided to make it “Super Smackdown!” since they usually give us jack when it isn’t a house show. What we saw on TV however, was the usual excellence these two have given us over the summer. I feel this is getting overrated by the 411 staff somewhat, but make no mistake; these two deliver every time out and it was great to watch this feud.

    2) 08/29/2011, WWE Raw – Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler (***): It’s been a darn fine week for The Viper, as his Cage Match met expectations and this Raw Opener exceeded them. Ziggler continues to perhaps be the most underrated in-ring worker in WWE, as most smart fans don’t even like him that much despite his consistency. And I think we really just need to accept that Orton is the real deal and not Captain Chinlock anymore; the guy’s had great opponents, but he’s been dominating the Match of the Week rankings.
    3) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Sin Cara vs. Daniel Bryan (***): This on the other hand, I know is being overrated. ***1/2 guys? As Miz would say; Really? REALLY? REALLY? By that logic Owen Hart vs. 1-2-3 Kid has to be ****1/2 at least. Anyway, good stuff, Daniel Bryan is the Best Wrestler in the World, Huncio didn’t botch anything, it was short but good.

411 GUEST READER OF THE WEEK: Stephen Davidson
    1) 08/29/2011, WWE Raw – Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler (***3/4)
This was a nice surprise. I was expecting a five-minute, paint-by-numbers squash. Instead, we got a highly competitive contest where it felt to me like both guys were giving it a little extra – Orton, in particular. His powerslam had extra OOMPH! His RKO had extra OOMPH! This whole MATCH had extra OOMPH! It was hampered somewhat by Foregone Conclusion Syndrome and the absolute necessity that Orton win a match with the RKO and nothing else. Still unexpected and fresh counters, clean and crisp execution, and the necessary time to tell a story and make Dolph look like a star put this one at the top of the list for me, this week.

    2) 08/30/2011, WWE Super SmackDown – Steel Cage Match: Randy Orton vs. Christian (***1/2): A strong, well-worked match that was (as with the previous Orton/Ziggler match) hampered by the obvious outcome in addition to the ever-nebulous physics of a steel cage match. (What exactly DID Orton do to pull Christian back in over the top at the end, there?) And, again, he HAD to win with the RKO, but at least it had a twist. And they played off of earlier matches well, with their ability to predict each other’s moves. Christian’s sunset-flip fake and subsequent attempt to scale the cage were GOLD. I suppose, though, this one gave me about what I expected (though I rate it behind most of their other matches from this year), whereas the Orton/Ziggler match far exceeded expectations and was less predictable as far as the spots were concerned.
    3) 08/30/2011, WWE SmackDown – Sin Cara vs. Daniel Bryan (***): This was a tough call. Impact had a number of solid bouts, this week, too. I ultimately went with this one for its stiffness and flat-out fun factor. I found the ending to be too abrupt, and I don’t like Sin Cara’s finishing move combination (neither the senton nor the Lionsault look like they hurt), and I also really think Daniel Bryan needs a win. But with a better ending and more time to build some drama, this could have easily challenged for the top position. Maybe next time!

Daniel Bryan’s grasp on the top ten finally loosens as he drops to fifteenth place with his #50 match dropping off in favor of the Christian/Orton cage match, which did nothing but help their rankings. Orton is now in 20% of this list’s top matches for the year so far, and Trent Barreta finds himself back in the top 10.
