411’s TNA Impact Report 7.29.05

July 29, 2005 | Posted by Larry Csonka

Welcome to the all-new IMPACT on the web recap! With TNA having no domestic TV deal (besides the syndicated Xplosion, which will run the same Impact as on the web now,) they are now offering Impact on the web. Go to tnawrestling.com and follow the directions, all you need now is Real Player!

Last week on Impact:

Match #1 Lance Hoyt vs. David Young went to a no contest when Abyss came down and beat both of their asses

  • Jim Mitchell has the mic now. TNA…listen up. What you have witnessed is a foreshadowing of things to come. Not only is Abyss a monster, but also he is a weapon of mass destruction and Mitchell holds the detonator…brace yourselves for further explosions.
  • Christopher Daniels joined the commentary team.

Match #2 In a Super X Cup Tournament Match: Samoa Joe defeated Sonjay Dutt

  • Joe refuses to talk to Shane Douglas after the match
  • Waltman and Lynn argue in the back. Waltman says to stay out of his business, and his spotlight. Lynn says Waltman wouldn’t have a spotlight if it weren’t for him and all the matches they had together all those years ago. Lynn says he helped him back in the day…he fed him and gave him a place to live. Waltman tosses money at him, and Lynn says when Waltman made the big leagues, he never called Lynn. Waltman says that’s because he can’t hang… Waltman worked 300 days a year and didn’t have time for Lynn. Waltman says to stay out of his business…Lynn says the BS is that Waltman tried to hurt AJ…Waltman says to shut up, he had a neck broken and no one thought about him. Waltman says for Lynn to leave him the hell alone. Waltman wants to know if Lynn is feeling froggy? At Sacrifice, Waltman challenges Lynn and he accepts.

Match #3 Kip James and Monty Brown defeated Sonny Siaki and Apollo

  • Simon Diamond is bitching at David Young for his bad performances. Shane Douglas is there to interview them. Simon says close doesn’t count. Simon says he has all of the physical tools, and Simon will provide his guidance to make him a star. Young has nothing to lose he says, Simon corrects him and says “the only thing you have to lose without me is more matches.”
  • The referees tell Larry that it is an unsafe work environment. They refuse to ref the match at Sacrifice. YAY ME! They say to fine, suspend or fire them, but they won’t work that match.
  • Here comes Raven…the champ has something to say. He has a seat in the corner, and says plans are like tyrants. The simpler they are, the easier they are. His plan was simple, to take more punishment than Abyss and to outlast him. He ripped his back to shreds in a pile on thumbtacks, he figured the only way to make sure Abyss took them, was for him to take them. And them JJ came down…with his little buddy Rhino. JJ tried to steal his thunder after a hard fought victory. He has come to the conclusion that TNA is not big enough for the two of them…and someone has to go. He is so fed up and JJ and he will have to end it once and for all. JJ, you can’t run or hide…there is no escape. You are an infection polluting the air…but I am a human cancer…HERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE’S JEFFY! JJ says he is bitching and moaning…no wonder he has no friends. Raven should he at the top of the list to get fired, not JJ. He built TNA from the ground up, but now they want rid of him. JJ says that when he gets mad, he gets the job done. JJ has never liked him, and JJ wants his belt back. Raven says JJ is deluded. When he finishes with JJ, the only thing he will be qualified for is an autopsy. Raven challenges him for the belt…Rhino is out…GORE misses and Raven with rights to Rhino now. Clothesline by Raven. JJ to the ring…GORE, GORE, GORE to Raven! They beat him down, and JJ locks in the figure four as Rhino pounds on Raven.

Match #4 In a Super X Cup Tournament Match: AJ Styles defeated Matt Bentley

    Today on Impact:

    Elix Skipper vs. Sonjay Dutt

Super X Cup Match: Alex Shelley vs. Shocker

    Cassidy Riley vs. Mikey Batts

    Matt Bentley vs. James Storm

And in our main event: Super X Cup Match: Chris Sabin vs. Petey Williams

    Here is the bracket:

We see highlights from last week’s show.

    TNA Impact Starts…NOW!

Tenay and West welcome us to IMPACT! We are of course live, via tape delay from Universal Studios.

Match #1 Elix Skipper vs. Sonjay Dutt vs. Shark Boy

They circle…and then back away. Wristlock by Sharky, arm drags by Dutt to Elix. Elix with rights to Sharky, but Sharky gets the face buster to Elix. Dutt slingshots in, but Elix catches him and Sharky sneaks in and rolls Elix up for 2. Sharky whipped to the corner, Dutt charges and eats a boot. DSD try, Elix breaks it up and chops away at Dutt. Dutt set up top… Sharky back in and Elix nails him. Suplex in, Sharky floats over and rolls up Elix for 2 as Dutt flew in with a dropkick to break it up. Elix with a butterfly suplex to Dutt, followed by some chops. Off the ropes and Dutt set on the top, but he counters and pulls Elix to the floor. Sharky flies out, but Elix catches him and hot shots him off of the railing. Snap mare and kick by Elix to Dutt on the floor. Back in the ring goes Dutt and rams Sharky off of the steel post. Elix tosses him in and climbs the apron, but Dutt with a springboard dropkick to Elix and he flies to the floor. Dutt grabs Sharky…and gets the Ultimo Dragon Special (back flip stunner into the reverse DDT) for the win.

Winner: Sonjay Dutt @ 4:00 via pin

  • Fun and fast paced opener. I also like that they seem to be trying to give Elix some edge, and a definite heel turn here. Also, it’s about time Sonjay got a win.

In the back Larry Z is talking with BG James. Larry says he is causing trouble, but BG says that he is the victim. Larry says the refs are scared, and hands BG a ref shirt and says that he will ref the match at the PPV. Larry says is he doesn’t take this job he can keep the shirt and apply at Footlocker!

Tenay hypes the Super X Cup, and they show the bracket…look above for mine!

Match #2 Super X Cup Match: Alex Shelley vs. Shocker

Lock up, reversals and to their feet. Lock up again, more reversals and Shocker with a snap mare and Alex goes to the floor. Back in now, and a lock up. Side headlock by Alex, off the ropes and some counters, and arm drags now. Sweet series of stuff going on here, and they stand off. They talk smack, and slap the piss out of each other. Shocker with a right, and we take a break.

    BUY TNA STUFF!

We are back as Shocker gets a knee to Alex. Shoulder block by Shocker, and an arm drag. DDT by Shocker! Asai dropkick by Shocker, followed by a twisting elbow for 2. Alex hot shots Shocker, and then nails a spin kick. Suicide dive to Shocker by Alex. HAHA! He celebrates and mocks Tenay a bit. Alex on the apron and Shocker has him, suplex try countered and Alex with a weird, yet swank roll up for 2. Shocker with a tilt a whirl backbreaker to Alex, followed by a big boot. Shocker up top…FROG SPLASH 1…2…NO! Shocker charges for a clothesline, but Shelley leaps and wraps himself around Shocker and rolls him up and wins! It was basically Shocker’s own roll up finish he always uses, but a much cooler way of getting into it by Shelley

Winner: Alex Shelley @ 5:27 via pin

  • A solid match that I really enjoyed, although it was a bit short. Shelley’s character is great right now and I am digging him more in the ring each time out. Him mocking Shocker after the match was also hilarious. The good news is he moves on in the tournament, the bad news…HE’S A GONNA DIE when he faces Joe.

Jim Mitchell says TNA is up in arms over what Abyss did last week. He says when looking for a world title shot, they are made to wait in line. Abyss is impatient, and refuses to wait. Mitchell says there is no controlling him. Mitchell says there are laws, and everyone in his way is prey…and Abyss is the hunter. They have nothing against Hoyt…but he was in the wring place at the wrong time. Abyss will bring a new level of brutality, and Abyss will display his dominance over TNA…muahahahahahaha (yes, he did his evil laugh.)

Match #3 Cassidy Riley vs. Mikey Batts

Riley is in his “Stevie” mode as he worships Raven, which is cool. Batts has his new gear that he debuted at the PPV.

Batts slaps Riley, and he replies. Riley with rights, corner whip, the clothesline and high knee lift ala Raven to Batts. Riley poses like Raven, and Rhino is here!

GORE, GORE, GORE TO BATTS! GORE, GORE, GORE TO RILEY! JJ is out and asks Raven where his friends are as Rhino gives Batts the “Rhino-driver” (piledriver.) Raven’s music hits he is on the ramp. He says apparently they have decided that they can take Raven out, since he has no friends. Raven says that they want it 2 on 1, but he continues to say it is amazing what you will find after 17 years on sacrificing your body. Over that time, a bond can be formed that if one is scarred bad enough, you won’t feel the pain. Even though I may not have friends…I think an enemy will do.

    **Lights out**

SABU IS HERE! Chair shots to Rhino and JJ! Triple jump moonsault to Rhino!

Raven says it will be 2 on 2, Sabu is homicidal, suicidal and genocidal. Raven can promise them one thing…pain…quote the Raven…NEVERMORE!

    Winner: No One

  • Effective segment to set up the tag match, and bring Sabu back. You have to wonder if Sabu will actually stay with him, or in the end if they will finish that feud, which would rule.

Match #4 Matt Bentley w/the lovely Traci vs. James Storm w/Chris Harris

Bentley bails, and Storm chases him. Back in the ring and Bentley in control as he caught him on the way in. Bentley chokes out Storm, sends him off the ropes but Storm dumps him to the floor. Chops by Storm, and Bentley is crotched on the railing. More chops by Storm, tossed back in and Bentley is able to nail Storm off of the apron and into the steel. Double sledge by Bentley, and then works the back of Storm. Again ramming him into the apron. Bentley whips him to the ring post, which Storm sold like death. Bentley rolls him in and covers for 2. Snap mare and a knee drop by Bentley gets 2. Rear headlock by Bentley…Storm fights to his feet and escapes. Off the ropes, but Bentley gets a knee to the gut and Storm is down and Bentley covers for 2. Storm set on top now, Bentley up as well…superplex, Bentley covers for 2. Rear choke by Bentley, Storm up and elbows out, but Bentley pulls him back down and covers again for 2. Bentley choke shim over the middle rope, and then Traci gets her shots in. PAY BACK! Suplex try blocked by Storm, roll up gets 2 on Bentley. Clothesline by Bentley gets 2. Storm tries to battle back, but Bentley with an eye poke. Snap mare and a headlock again to Storm. Storm tries to get to his feet, elbows out tries a superkick, BLOCKED! Swung around and Bentley tries the superkick…BLOCKED! Storm off the ropes and a hip toss into a pin gets 2 for Bentley. Storm set on top, Bentley follows…Storm fights…tosses off Bentley! Cowboy hat time, 8 second ride and…that’s all?

Winner: James Storm @ 6:47 via pin

  • Wow…they build a really nice match and then shit it away with that finish? No drama, no build, no good comeback…no surprise…just shit.

    BUY TNA STUFF!

Shane Douglas is with AJ Styles. He will find out his next opponent as Petey faces off with Sabin next. AJ says the Super X Cup is the best of the best. He said at one time the X Division made AJ Styles…or is it that AJ Styles made the X Division? The winner of the next match can find out why they call him…phenomenal.

Hmmm…someone was acting a bit heelish there.

Christopher Daniels joins the commentary team for this Christopher Daniels Invitational match.

Match #5 Super X Cup Match: Chris Sabin vs. Petey Williams w/A1 37.50 49.50

Here we go. Lock up and some arm drags, reversals and now chops by Sabin. Off the ropes, reversal and Williams tries the CD, no countered into the Cradle Shock by Sabin. Petey escapes, they both kick each other, catch the feet and let go and stand off as we take a break.

    BUY TNA STUFF

Back as Williams has Sabin down on the mat and Sabin gets to his feet. Off the ropes and a bulldog by Sabin gets 2. Props to Tenay for bringing up Sabin as the first Super X Cup winner, as well as the fact that he beat Juvi for it. Snap mare by Sabin, and a running basement style enziguri to Williams for 2. Rights by Sabin, off the ropes and a reversal and Williams sent to the apron. A1 gets involved and Williams gets a Tornado DDT to Sabin from the apron. Williams sends Sabin back in and covers for 2. Boots by Williams, rights now and a snap mare and basement dropkick. A1 now chokes out Sabin on the ropes, damn dirty Canadians! Williams picks up Sabin, who tries to fight back. Williams with chops, but Sabin fights back with chops of his own. Eye poke by Williams, and he continues to punish Sabin. Rear choke by Williams, into a neck breaker and a cover for 2. Sabin again with rights, Williams with a back elbow though and covers for 2. Slam by Williams, leg drop and a cover for 2. Rights by Sabin who fights to his feet, but gets tossed to the floor and A1 works him over. Williams grabs him, and pulls him down into his knees as he leapt down…it looked like it hurt. Rights by Williams, Sabin rammed to the corner. Tree of woe! OHHHHHH CANNNNNNNNNNAAAAADAAAAAAAA! Sabin is able to toss him off to the floor. Sabin gets a suicide dive! Both men are down, and struggle to their feet. Back in the ring now and a atomic drop by Sabin, jawbreaker and a dropkick to Williams. Spin kick to Williams, RUNNING LYGER BOMB by Sabin gets 2! Sabin tries a DDT variation, but Williams escapes with a northern lights throw. Williams reels him in…Sabin counters out. Williams tries the sharpshooter…LOCKS IT in! Sabin crawls and gets the ropes. Williams misses a charge, but leaps from the 2nd rope, Sabin catches him and into a backbreaker, and then right into a SICK EXPLODER that gets 2! Sabin looks to finish things, enziguri…he has him up…CRADLE SHOCK! A1 has the ref distracted, as Sabin had Williams covered for about 10. Sabin goes to tell the ref, Williams has the hockey stick, nails Sabin! CANADIAN DESTROYER…Chris Sabin was 23 (thanks Cook.)

Winner: Petey Williams @ 12:00 via pin

  • Great match. Petey and Sabin always work great together, and this was no exception..

After today’s action, here is how the X Cup Tournament stands:

  • Final Impact Thoughts: Another strong show this week, as they continued to focus on the X Cup and the Raven vs. JJ and Rhino feud with the return of Sabu. Now they need to work the rest of the card the next two weeks. But a lot of good stuff on today’s show.
