AEW-Warner Bros. Discovery Partnership Expected to Continue Despite Potential Network Sales

AEW’s television future on Warner Bros. Discovery networks is expected to remain stable even if WBD eventually sells its cable assets, according to a recent Fightful Select Q&A. Rumors have raised questions about programming retention, but current expectations point toward continuity.
According to Sean Ross Sapp, with Warner Bros. Discovery’s proposed sales unlikely to finalize before late 2026, AEW still holds at least one guaranteed year on its existing deal, plus a built-in option year for extension. That timetable creates a comfortable cushion for any buyer. If the new owners see value, they can activate the option year. If not, they can walk away without penalty. The structure works because AEW delivers dependable ratings at comparatively low operating costs. Sapp noted that production costs are covered on AEW’s end, and wrestling content fits the financial model cable networks increasingly need: consistent viewership without big budgets.
Even with shifting ownership, the combination of audience reliability and cost control makes AEW an easy programming choice to keep. There has been no formal comment from WBD regarding long-term implications. However, Tony Khan expressed hope that the partnership would continue for at least two more years.
