AJ Styles Doesn’t Know What WWE is Trying To Do With Gunther

AJ Styles says he’s not sure where Gunther’s direction is headed, but thinks he could fill a role WWE is missing as a true heel champion. Gunther has been circling the Undisputed WWE Championship since not long after he retired Styles at the Royal Rumble. However, the Career Killer has not been able to win the big one and failed to earn a shot at the title at Saturday Night’s Main Event, when he and Sami Zayn lost to CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.

On the latest Phenomenally Retro, Styles was asked about the notion that WWE’s lack of follow-up has been one of the biggest flops of the year. He noted that he can understand that assessment and noted that he’s not sure what WWE is trying to do with him right now. He said that Gunther could fill a role as heel champion, as the two SummerSlam World Title matches are missing such a performer. You can see the highlights below:

On Gunther’s Lack of Follow-Up Being a ‘Flop’:

“Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from, I do. But I meam, what do we do? We can’t just have him retiring people, you know? That’s not going to work, but there’s always the chance that he could. So yeah, I get it. I don’t know, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I just don’t know what we’re trying to do, like he can’t retire everybody he wrestles, so…”

On a Possible World Title Run For Gunther:

“Is that the one thing we don’t have right now, is a heel champion? Like we don’t — in the matches that we have, we’ve still not got a clear heel. With Seth and Roman, there’s no clear heel there. With Punk and Cody, no real heel there. These guys are huge stars, but I wouldn’t say they’re hated heels. Gunther is a hated heel.”

On the Notion of Gunther vs. Nick Aldis At SummerSlam:

“You’re right. I can’t see how Aldis could beat Gunther. I just can’t see it. And dude, he’s a lot bigger than most people think. I mean, he’s as big as Gunther. He may be in better physically-looking shape than Gunther. I know it. He’s a big dude and he takes care of himself. He just so happens to be a great General Manager as well.”
