AJ Styles’ son Avery is now in the middle of his own wrestling career, something that the WWE Hall of Famer recently weighed in on. Avery is currently part of the TNA roster and will make his in-ring debut there at TNA Bound For Glory.

AJ trained his son and has spoken about that process, something he touched on in his conversation with Cody Rhodes on What Do You Wanna Talk About?. He noted that he has perhaps been too hard on Avery and is learning how to give positive feedback. He also talked about Avery’s instincts to lean into what he himself did and how he’ll eventually find his own identity. You can see the highlights below:

On Giving Avery Feedback:

“Well I mean, I think I’m a little hard on him. Oh, yeah. I’m probably the worst. Because I’m sure some of the things he’s like, ‘I can’t do anything right. Everything I do is wrong.’ And it’s because I expect it to be better. And I have to take a step back and remember what it was like for me. And if I would just go back and watch some of my old stuff, which was absolutely terrible, I’d realize that it just takes time.

“So I tried to say, ‘Well, this was good and this was good,’ and reserve the right to maybe don’t tell him everything that was bad, which was a lot. But I want him to get experience everywhere against everybody. And that’s TNA, that’s independent, whatever that goes. If I go down to the Performance Center, like I want him to see it all and do it all. And just get his horizons brightened to an extent where he’s seen it all and done it all.”

On Avery Finding His Own Identity:

“The biggest problem that a lot of people have right now is, they end up being like someone else. And I know that he is doing a lot of my stuff. But in time, he will realize that he’s able to do other stuff and be his own person. You know, I wanted to be like Kidman, Billy Kidman. And then as I was progressing it changed, and it was something totally different than him. I mean, I did the Shooting Star because [Press] of him. And then at one point, I really wanted to bodyslam him on his head, because apparently the Shooting Star got me in trouble in WCW.

“But the fact of the matter is, everybody finds someone to look up to when they first get in the business. And then you transition into another character and do other things that are more of [who] you are.”
