JDC may have lost his title match against Frankie Kazarian at TNA Final Resolution last night, but he also learned that he had the respect of a potential newcomer. That would be Jesse Funaki, son of Shoichi “Sho” Funaki, known primarily for his tenure in WWE under just his surname. Jesse had his debut match in the summer of 2024, and is 25 years old. In an exclusive backstage video released by TNA to Instagram, he introduces himself to JDC, and mentions that he was inspired by him back when he was known as Fandango, and beat Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 29.
Brian Myers then reveals that he’s getting Jesse “a little tryout-ski.” Check out the video below:
Could Jesse Funaki be the next big thing? Might he be discouraged by his inspiration’s loss to Kazarian, followed by a chaotic brawl?
Like his father, Jesse looks like an underdog size-wise. Yet that didn’t stop Sho from becoming WWE Cruiserweight Champion, Hardcore Champion, and the self-described status as “Smackdown’s Number One Announcer!” In a post-Rey Mysterio world, the obstacles to smaller guys aren’t what they used to be. Jesse is certainly one to keep an eye on for now.
