There has been a lot of criticism among fans as to how Gunther has been booked in 2026 so far, with the WWE star having meandered a bit since retiring John Cena and AJ Styles in quick succession in December of last year and then at the Royal Rumble. He has been involved in the Undisputed WWE Championship scene but has not been the focus and took a loss in the Money in the Bank qualifying match against CM Punk and Finn Balor before having a few weeks of interaction with Danhausen of late.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, sources in the company have intimated that there’s been a “mild sense” of frustration as well as confusion around how Gunther has been booked. His direction has reportedly been question among those in creative and there appears to be a level of uncertainty around how the company intends to use him, particularly considering the momentum he previously had. It was noted that some question whether there was a plan for Gunther after he retired John Cena.
Gunther destroyed Danhausen on last week’s show, leading to Finn Balor coming out to make the save. The Ring General then laid out Balor and powerbombed him through a table.
