On the latest episode of 1 Of A Kind, Fonzie discussed his infamous match against Beulah McGillicutty from 1997. Alfonso recalled how that bout not only became a legendary part of ECW history, but also saved his job with the company.
Alfonso, who joined ECW in 1995, faced McGillicutty at ECW As Good as It Gets in September of 1997 and lost to the valet. You can check out some highlights below:
On How the Match Came About:
“Yeah, it was supposed to be a tag match. Me and RVD against Beulah and Tommy. And the deal was, they got hurt before the match started.”
On the Legacy Of the Bout:
“So I got busted open like the first 35 seconds or something. And so I bled like — we’ll talk about it, pretty cool. And who knew that we could pull that off? Two non-wrestlers, and we didn’t — I’m not a wrestler, but I’ve been around the business 25 years at that point by ’97. I started in 1980. It was crazy that what we pulled off.”
On Going Over the Match:
“We talked a little bit before the match. Me, Van Dam, and you know, we talked with the whole crew and set something up and. We couldn’t do much. I can’t do a sunset flip or a crossbody. But we did a few cool things, and it just worked out.
“I thought we would do things that — that we both could do it more like a street fight. There’s a little scene in which she chops me and I reverse and put her in a turnbuckle, pulled down the strap and give her the big, stiff Ric Flair chop.”
On Being Accused Of Being a Mole To Get ECW Talent To WCW:
“Right. They thought it was me and Todd Gordon or somehow. But I never heard that until after the fact, until after the match. [They] said, ‘Oh, that saved your job. Fonzie.’ I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ ‘Oh, the WCW is calling you to steal our guys.’ I said, ‘No, they weren’t. Why would they call me?'”
