Cody Rhodes had a challenge ahead of him, facing The Ring General Gunther, at today’s WWE Clash in Italy event. The first-ever WWE premium live event kicked off with a bout for the WWE Undisputed Championship. However, Rhodes overcame the odds, surviving the so-called “Career Killer.”

Although Rhodes won the bout, the finish was not without controversy. Cody Rhodes hit Gunther with the Cross Rhodes to secure the pinfall victory. However, Gunther protested the pinfall and argued with the referee after the match.

Post-match replay footage showed that Gunther had his foot under the rope when the referee started the count. However, in the middle of the pinfall, Cody Rhodes hooked up Gunther’s legs, pulling out the leg that was under the rope.

Broadcasters Michael Cole and Corey Graves analyzed the footage, pointing out that the referee should not have started the count while Gunther’s foot was under the ropes. However, they also noted that the referee’s decision is final.

Regardless, Cody Rhodes remains WWE Undisputed Champion. The wrestler is now 2-0 against Gunther, also winning their first bout for the WWE Crown Jewel Championship at Crown Jewel 2024.
