Cook’s Lucha Libre AAA Review 7.18.26

I feel like this whole Reigns/Rollins/Brunson/Haliburton segment could have been done at Fanatics Fest and not made us wait for our lucha libre. I can’t imagine anyone caring about Roman lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy outside of him and his family.

Then. Now. Forever. Together!

We’re in San Luis Potosi! Rey Mysterio is WALKING! Andrea is WALKING with El Grande Americano! Corey Graves, JBL, Rey Mysterio & Savio Vega are our hosts!

Rey Mysterio makes his way to the ring! Rey wants to fix an injustice from before he became General Manager, and asks Andrea to come down to the ring. Rey thanks her for coming here, and apologizes for what happened to her. He wants to offer her a new contract with some more money. Andrea puts over the Mexican fans as the best in the world. She accepts the new contract.

Rey’s next issue involves the Latin American Championship. There will be a series of triple threat matches, and the winners will advance to a four-corners match to determine the next Latin American Champion.

El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Abismo Negro Jr. vs. Texano Jr.: This is in the first of the series of triple threat matches to set up the four-corners match for the Latin American Championship at TripleMania. Some back & forth with Wagner & Texano leads to a standoff. Abismo gets in there, dumps Wagner outside, Abismo tries to cover Texano with feet on the ropes, he gets called out. Series of near-falls, Wagner kicks both opponents out of the ring, hits the cannonball! Abismo gets covered in the ring for two. Wagner hits a DVD on Abismo for two. Texano breaks it up. Texano with some kicks to Wagner, hits a backbreaker for two. Abismo & Texano trade shots. Back suplex by Abismo gets two. Texano breaks up the Martinete, Wagner gets sent outside. Texano & Abismo trade shots. Texano hits a superplex, Wagner almost steals the win with a frog splash for two! Abismo gets a near-fall on Wagner, Abismo gets some knucks, he hits Texano and Texano tumbles outside. Wagner hits the Wagner Driver on Abismo for three!

Winner: El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. (8:35 via pinfall)
Match Rating: **1/2
I thought all three guys looked pretty credible here. Wagner was obviously the choice to move on and might be the choice to win the title though I feel I’m higher on him than WWE/AAA is right now.

La Hiedra explains to Lola Vice & Mr. Iguana that now that she has Laredo Kid by her side she’ll be unstoppable and take their titles. Lola tells Iguana that Hiedra is still in love with him and we get the spit take.

Twitter video shows us the Psycho Circus all getting along.

Mr. Iguana & Lola Vice make their way to ringside since they want to see the next match.

Laredo Kid & La Hiedra vs. Faby Apache & Joaquin Wilde: Laredo & Wilde start off. Some near-falls early, Corey tells us that Wilde was trained by Faby’s father, so that explains that team. Hiedra drops Faby on the turnbuckle, Faby fights back and we get stereo STFs. Hiedra sends Faby into the steps and hip attacks her. Wilde & Laredo tag in, Wilde hits a DDT, Laredo hits a driver then a dropkick and lands some strikes on Wilde. Brainbuster gets a near-fall on Wilde. Wilde tumbles to the floor after Hiedra splits the ropes. Laredo hits one top rope move, misses the second. Tags to Faby & Hiedra, Faby gets the upper hand. Dropkick off the top rope! Wilde ranas Laredo to the floor, Faby cannonballs to the floor! Wilde dropkicks Laredo, drops him with a backbreaker for two. Shots exchanged, Laredo rolls into a DDT, dives onto Wilde on the outside. Faby almost caught Hiedra with a two count then kicked her head off. Faby fights Laredo off, Hiedra catches Faby with a stunner for three!

Winners: Laredo Kid & La Hiedra (9:53 via pinfall)
Match Rating: **1/2
Laredo is the best partner I’ve seen alongside La Hiedra, if she can’t beat Iguana/Vice with him I don’t know what she’ll do.

We go to a video package from last week when Dominik Mysterio decided to defend El Grande Americano against Los Perros del Mal. We’ll hear from Los Perros next!

Rey Mysterio is having a press conference. He announces Mr. Iguana/Loa Vice vs. Laredo Kid/La Hiedra for next week. Rey Fenix vs. Mini Vikingo will happen the week after, and Flammer will defend the Reina de Reinas title against Lady Shani & La Catalina the week after that. Octagon Jr. suffered a neck injury in Monterrey, he has a long way to go. TripleMania is almost sold out.

Los Perros del Mal make their way to the ring. Rey Mysterio is back in the booth and has little answer for Corey’s questions. Daga talks about how the Perros del Mal were born. They were born because the business was becoming weak, and it’s becoming weak again. He puts over the Garzas, then says Bronco is the most dangerous man in the industry. If you look at Karmen, you’re screwed. Daga is the last man that Perro Jr. could rely on. They came to be the nightmare to everyone in the locker room. He calls out Dominik Mysterio. Daga accepts the challenge for Verano de Escalando. God forgives, Perros don’t.

Dominik Mysterio comes out! El Grande Americano follows him! We see Rayo & Barvo behind Los Perros! Things break down! Everyone is fighting as our live event comes to an end! So long for now!

I have a lot of questions about where things are going with this brand, none of which relate to what was presented this week, so I'll save some of those questions for another time. This week was a placeholder with a couple of matches setting up things for next week that might be good maybe.
