Csonka’s NXT Review 2.27.19

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Vanessa Borne and Aliyah defeated Xia Li and Taynara Conti @ 4:45 via pin [**]
– Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic went to a double countout @ 6:55 [***½]
NXT Women’s Title Match: Champion Shayna Baszler defeated Mia Yim @ 7:55 via submission [***¼]

– Follow all of my reviews at this link.

Johnny Gargano Speaks: Gargano arrived and spoke about how his last few weeks have been interesting. Johnny Wrestling was back, but then he failed to defend his title. He may feel like a champion, but he knows he isn’t. Ciampa arrived and says this is about them, and Gargano is at his best when they are together. When they are together, they win, but when they aren’t Gargano loses. Ciampa admits that they need each other, and proposes that they team in the Dusty Classic. They can close Takeover NYC side by side, as champions. They shake hands to the delight of the crowd. Good opening segment, with Ciampa continuing to be a manipulative bastard, striking while Gargano was weak.

– Ricochet says he and Black will get revenge on the Undisputed Era.

– Candice doesn’t approve of the DIY reunion.

Vanessa Borne and Aliyah vs. Xia Li and Taynara Conti: Conti & Borne started off, with Conti taking early control. Conti is looking smoother and more confident in the ring as of late. Aliyah got involved, allowing the heels to take control working double teams. Aliyah took the heat on Conti, grounding things. Conti survived, got the hot tag and Li ran wild with strikes and kicks. Borne made the save off of the blind tag, leading to the heel victory. Vanessa Borne and Aliyah defeated Xia Li and Taynara Conti @ 4:45 via pin [**] This was an OK opener, with all four showing improvement.

– Adam Cole told Velveteen Dream that he’s taking the North American title back; Dream blew them off.

Backstage. Bianca & Io argue and get pulled apart.

Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic: These two had some excellent outings on the indies, so they have chemistry. They start off, going to the power game, and pick up the pace into a stalemate. Both men showed great agility as they worked into some back and forth, and the crowd loved it. Dijakovic took control with his striking game, taking Lee down. Lee fired up, hit the POUNCE, but Dijakovic cut him off with the choke breaker for a near fall. Lee battled back with a high angle spinebuster, but Dijakovic sent him to the floor and followed with a big moonsault. BIG LADS DOING BIG LAD THINGS, leading to a double count out. Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic went to a double countout @ 6:55 [***½] This was a really good and tremendously fun hoss style sprint; give me more!

– Bayley & Banks arrived, showing off their tag titles. The crowd loved them and they were glad to be back home. They thanked NXT and the fans, and promised to defend the titles across all brands, including NXT.

NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler vs. Mia Yim: Baszler took early control, toying with Yim, who the crowd loves. Yim quickly battled back with strikes and a suicide dive. Yim then focused on attacking the hand of Baszler, but Yim missed a kick and hit the steps, allowing Baszler to attack that leg, grounding the action. Baszler’s focus is really good, as she wastes no motion in her offense. Yim attacked the bad hand, escaped the clutch, but Baszler pulled a knee bar. Yim made the ropes and followed with a DDT, but couldn’t follow up as her knee gave out. Yim kept fighting but was hobbled in doing so, but picked up a near fall off of a desperation powerbomb. Baszler quickly hit a PK, locked on the clutch and Yim tapped. Champion Shayna Baszler defeated Mia Yim @ 7:55 via submission [***¼] This was a good match and work from both ladies. Yim is such a great fire filled babyface, while Baszler is so raw & real, coming off so naturally.

– End Scene.

– Thanks for reading.

This week’s NXT was a really good show, with the Gargano/Ciampa angle, the continued build to the Dusty Classic, and quality wrestling to boot; an easy hour to watch and digest.
