According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, as of now, it looks as if Lucha Underground may continue, but if they do, it will be with a smaller budget. Lucha Underground producer Eric Van Wagenen was on Afterbuzz TV and asked about the future of the show. He didn’t have any hard news but said it was a better than even chance there would be a season four and said that he expects a decision to come from El Rey sometime over the next month. He also said that El Rey has a certain time frame to announce the renewal before they would lose the rights to the show and if that was the case, then they would shop it elsewhere.
Van Wagenen also said that that MGM and El Rey have different opinions on the costs of the show. El Rey wants the show, and they will pay something for the show, but nowhere near enough to fully fund the show. The people who funded seasons two and three aren’t willing to put more money into it. The WON adds that at this time, nobody has been willing to come through and fund the next season, but they reportedly have “some funding”. But that funding is nowhere near what they had in the past, which means lots of budget cutting will have to be done.
In regards to the talent appearing on Impact, Van Wagenen said that was Dorian Roldan’s (AAA Vice President/ Lucha Underground EVP) call, and that he was at first against it, but is now no longer negative on it since they aren’t giving the talent work right now and hope that everyone can get work elsewhere. It had been reported that some Lucha Underground talent haven’t been paid since last year’s tapings, because they only get paid when they work, and aren’t on salary.
