A new report has some context on Nigel McGuinness’ foot injury that he suffered during the AEW Continental Challenge Cup. As noted, McGuinness was announced as having suffered an injury during his Continental Challenge Cup match on the August 15th episode of AEW Collision. McGuinness, of course, continued to compete and made it to the finals, where he ultimately lost to Jon Moxley at AEW All In on Sunday.
There was some speculation online that the whole injury was a work in order to emphasize McGuinness as having more of an underdog story making his way through the tournament. While this won’t be a surprise to most, Bryan Alvarez reports that the injury was legitimate and that they folded it into the story to carry him through to the All In match with Moxley at Wembley Stadium.
McGuinness’ injury actually happened on August 12th as that week of Collision was taped. McGuinness defeated Katsuyori Shibata in that match, then went on to beat Hechicero in the quarterfinals and Kyle O’Reilly in the semifinals before losing to Moxley in a hard fought match on Sunday. McGuinness was pulled from his match at ROH Death Before Dishonor against Lee Moriarty on August 22nd and was replaced by Shibata.
