Dragon Lee has revealed that he never planned to wrestle under the name fans know today. Instead, he wanted to build his career with a different identity before his brother convinced him to carry on the Dragon Lee name.

Lee has two brothers, Draslitico and Rush, both signed to AEW. Dralistico became known as Mistico once the original Mistico left CMLL to work in WWE as Sin Cara. Currently, both of Lee’s brothers are part of AEW’s La Facción Ingobernable, with Rush serving as its leader.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Lee looked back on the start of his wrestling career and explained how the change of his name happened before his debut in Mexico.

Wrestling his first two matches as Boricua, a name inspired by his father’s Puerto Rican wrestling style, Lee wanted to continue using that name and create his own identity. However, that changed when his brother stepped in.

According to Lee, his brother had used the Dragon Lee name for around a year and a half before taking on the Mistico character. Before moving on, he said that he should become the new Dragon Lee.

“It’s weird because I just did two matches before I debuted in Mexico. I got a name, Boricua; that’s a Puerto Rican name, because my father wrestled like a boricua, and I said I’m gonna use that name. So my brother, he was Dragon Lee before me for one and a half years, and he becomes Mistico, and then [he said], ‘You have to be Dragon Lee.’ I said, I want to be just me. You can change this name. I really love the name. I really love his mask. I changed so many things to his mask, but still I saw my brother, he does crazy things. He was very aerial, crazy things. To me, the name Dragon Lee was so much for me, I’m nothing to the name.”

Today, Lee has made the character his own. After multiple stints across CMLL, NJPW, AAA, the Ring of Honor, and even AEW, Lee continues making his mark in WWE.
