John Cena announced the “John Cena Classic” tonight at WWE Backlash Tampa. Ahead of WWE Backlash 2026, Cena promised he had a “history-making” announcement at the May 9 premium live event.
The 17-time World Champion appeared at the show ahead of the main event and was greeted with “one more match” chants from the crowd. Cena acknowledged the chants and the criticism toward the ending of his retirement match against Gunther.
Cena said that he thinks about that often, but the veteran then added he is extremely satisfied with the fact that the event that featured his last match also showcased the future superstars of WWE in the form of Sol Ruca and Oba Femi, who, in his words, kicked “Brock Lesnar’s a**” at WrestleMania 42.
The 17-time World Champion then announced the “John Cena Classic,” which would pit the NXT talent against the main roster superstars. The winner will be bestowed with the John Cena Classic Championship.
Cena further added that the fan vote will determine the winner of the championship, implying that even if a wrestler loses matches, he or she could still win the title.
It is currently unknown when the event will take place. 411Mania will provide details as and when they are available. Check out John Cena’s comments below:
