Konnan Says Mercedes Mone’s Current Character Is “Super One-Dimensional”

AEW star Mercedes Mone is unarguably in the best phase of her pro wrestling career. Since debuting in the Tony Khan-led promotion in March 2024, The CEO has been on a title-hunting spree, currently holding nine titles across multiple promotions.

Mone recently became the longest-reigning AEW TBS Champion, breaking Jade Cargill’s record of 508 days. However, wrestling veteran Konnan has his reservations about Mercedes. In a recent edition of his Keepin’ It 100 OFFICIAL podcast, Konnan said that he is unsure why Tony Khan opted to offer The CEO a lucrative deal, which he estimated to be in the range of $4 million to $5 million.

While he acknowledged Mercedes’ star power, the AAA creative team member claimed that her promo skills leave a lot to be desired, adding that her current character is “super one-dimensional.”

“Tony’s probably being sold on it; look, maybe she was doing good numbers in the ratings. I don’t know. Or maybe he’s a mark for Star Wars, which he probably is. And she did that Mandalorian thing with Baby Yoda and all that. I don’t know how they convince him to give her five million or four million or whatever it is, but I know it’s one of those two numbers,” he added. “But I think what she does have going for her is she has some name value. She has a very unique look because I saw her in person, and when I saw her, I was like, ‘Yeah, she looks like a star, bro.’ She dresses like a star. She knows how to act like a star. She can wrestle. She’s still not good on the mic after all these years. Her character is super one-dimensional,” Konnan said. [H/T: Wrestling Inc.]

Mercedes defended her CMLL World Women’s Championship against Persephone at last night’s Viernes Espectacular event.

The AEW TBS Champion is set to host a Title vs. Title Open Challenge on tonight’s WrestleDream PPV event, which will take place at the Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Missouri.
