Lex Luger Recalls Ric Flair Carrying Him Through Hour-Long Match Six Months Into Career

Lex Luger was famously pushed hard very early in his career, and he recently recalled how Ric Flair carried him through an hour-long Broadway at that point. Luger worked extensively with the Nature Boy in the NWA and WCW, including a 60-minute time limit draw at NWA Battle of the Belts III which was less than a year after his first match.

Luger reflected on his early push and how he didn’t really know anything at that time in an interview with Going Ringside. He noted that he didn’t know who the Four Horsemen were and how, during the match, Flair called for a sunset flip which he didn’t know. You can see the highlights below:

On His Early Push:

“That was the plan, the Four Horsemen. I didn’t even know who the Four Horsemen were. I was football player and thought wrestling would be a cool thing to do, because it got so popular so fast with the WrestleManias. And I never watched it growing up.

“So I came in and yeah, everybody goes, “You’re going to be in the Horsemen.’ They’re all so excited. I knew Flair because I had wrestled him down in Florida in an hour Broadway about six months in, which was a whole another story, but wow. And only Flair could get me through an hour match at that point in my career, for sure.”

On Being So Inexperienced At That Time:

“Well, I’d only been wrestling for a few months, and they told me I had to wrestle for an hour. I go, ‘How am I going to do that?’ ‘Don’t worry, Ric will get [you through it].

“Ric called — a sunset flip is a very basic move, wrestling during the match. I said, ‘What’s that?’ Ric went, ‘Oh my gosh!’ But he got me through an hour. But yeah, that — an hour Broadway, that’s a lot of wrestling…. for a guy who didn’t know how to wrestle yet, that was a lot. Only Flair could have gotten a guy like me through that, an hour match like that. That’s how good he is in the ring.”
