During a recent interview with NJPW1972.com, NJPW wrestler Robbie X discussed his rise in New Japan, the 2026 Best of the Super Juniors tournament, and more. Below are some highlights:

Robbie X on How the Junior Heavyweight Style Has Changed in NJPW

“I reckon so. If you go back to ten years ago, Kota Ibushi, Ricochet, Ospreay, I think so. The famous clip of Ricochet and Will Ospreay doesn’t fit with junior wrestling now; I think there was a reaction where wrestlers didn’t want to imitate that fast paced style and have people get tired of it, but at the same time, it’s something that’s missing from the junior division.”

On If He Feels the Style Is Moving Closer to the Heavyweight Style

“Yeah. I think that’s become more effective, it’s gotten results for the junior heavyweight champions in the last few years, so I wouldn’t criticise, but junior heavyweight wrestling has a speed and an extra dimension to it that makes it special. So when you see me, that’s what I’ll lean into, and that’s what I plan to be doing in this tournament.”

On Facing AEW’s Nick Wayne in the First Round of the BOSJ

“He’s a special character (laughs). I actually wrestled him in his first match in the UK, I think when he was 17 or so. He spent a lot of time in the last year out injured, but he’s still crazy young and has a lot of wrestling knowledge for someone so young. It’s an exciting start.”

On Who He Wants To See Make It to the Final Four of the Tournaament

“Well, I’m sick of wrestling Robbie (Eagles), so I’d rather it not be him… Jakob Austin Young would be a beatable pick, I’ve just beaten him and I know it’s hard to be in your first tournament. I think though I’d like to see YOH make it through.”

On Wanting YOH To Make It To the Finals

“He came very close in the finals last year, and he’s just such a different, such a bizarre character that it’s really interesting to have him in that finals position. And if nothing else, Fujita beat YOH last year and I’ve beaten Fujita many times, so that sets me up well.(laughs)”

Robbie X on What a Tournament Win Would Mean for Him and a Title Shot Against DOUKI

“Well, like I said, you’re never just facing DOUKI right now, it’s always the HOUSE OF TORTURE. The plan was to beat him in the group stages, but now he’s sneaked out of that. He always has a plan and a way to avoid losing that championship, but I have Unbound Co. as well, and it’s not just me that wants to see an end to HOUSE OF TORTURE in control of that title.”

Best of the Super Juniors 33 Night 1 kicks off on Thursday, May 14. The event will be held at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. It will stream live on NJPW World.
