Sami Zayn says he doesn’t know why he was picked over Chad Gable to end Gunther’s WWE Intercontinental Title reign. Zayn defeated the Ring General at WrestleMania 40 to end Gunther’s record reign with the title. The moment came only a few months after Gunther had a feud with Chad Gable, another person who had underdog support from the fans for a possible title reign.

Zayn was asked about the matter in his appearance on Insight With Chris Van Vliet. He noted that while he doesn’t know how it happened that he was picked, he thought it kind of worked out for everyone because Gable found his groove with the El Grande Americano gimmick and its aftermath. You can see highlights below:

On How He Ended Up Being Pitched As the Person To Beat Gunther:

“I don’t know how it came about. I truly don’t.”

On People Thinking It Should Have Been Chad Gable:

“I don’t know how it kind of came about. I think the dominoes just fell in that way because I was actually, if you go back and watch, leading into even in November or something. I think I remember I was doing promos with Drew McIntyre about how I’d never beaten him, and how I’ll be world champion, and I’ll show you. Then somehow, I don’t know how. That was one of those [times when] the dominoes fell in that direction. But I mean, again, it all kind of worked out, I think, in the end, because even Chad is in a better position now than he’s ever been right at this moment. I’m in a better position than I ever have been. So I think in a weird roundabout way, and sometimes you can’t really [anticipate it]. It’s come up a few times now as we’re talking about the domino effect that you can’t really predict. But then 10 years removed, or from a different overhead point of view, and you’re like, well, actually, this is kind of the starting point.”
